The 2026 Gay Travel Index: Where To Go, Where To Avoid
Spartacus travel resource has been publishing the Gay Travel Index since 2012. As we well know, not every travel destination is eager to welcome the LGBTQ community with open arms. And, in some places, it is quite dangerous to even visit. Furthermore, we gay men tend to get a little frisky while we travel. The Gay Travel Index also includes info on local laws and where you might be thrown in jail for trying to get your groove on. The Index covers 216 countries and regions, and the US specific Index covers all of our states. Indicators like human rights laws, gay tourism marketing, population of queer communities, and local LGBTQ resources are all taken into account.
Here are the top 10 best gay travel destinations, according to the Index.
Iceland
Who knew that Iceland was at the top of the list for equal rights laws, social inclusion of queer folk, and same-sex marriage support? The nation is beautiful and has many romantic and picturesque locales. It also has a lively gay scene.
Malta
Malta hosts a number of Pride events in its land of beautiful beaches and historic sites. Queer rights are very strong in Malta.
Spain
Girrlll...Spanish men are just hot. And frisky! We've been to Barcelona Pride...it definitely is a bucket list destination. The country is full of historic sites that make for romantic getaways. You can also meet men very easily. From beaches to monasteries, there are so many places to visit.
Germany
Beyond great beer and big sausages, Germany ranks high on the Gay Travel Index because of the increase in legal protection for the queer community. We also know that Berlin is infamous for its gay adult nightlife and kink scene. Anything goes! This is a destination to let your freak flag fly!
Portugal
Why not do a Portugal/Spain trip? The queer scene in Portugal is colorful, and you can show off in your Speedo at any of the many beaches. There's also Lisbon Pride to look forward to.
Belgium
No, not just because of the waffles. LOL. Belgium has full legal protection for queer folk. It is also seen as progressive and celebrates a big fashion scene. We had no idea!
Canada
We knew that Canada had to make the list, although we thought it would rank higher. Their political figures alone are hot! Toronto is known as the gay mecca of Canada, with a big Pride and queer nightlife scene. Also, go-go boys can be fully nude. Yaassss! The nation has been known for an open attitude towards the LGBTQ community, but the Gay Index shows that things may be shifting, much like the US is having a resurgence in anti-LGBTQ attitudes.
Sweden
Sweden enjoys one of the highest rates of social acceptance of the queer community. Highlights include Stockholm Pride and beautiful locales.
Netherlands
Amsterdam. Need we say more? This nation was one of the earliest in regard to progressive queer rights. It has a long history of LGBTQ protections and acceptance.
France
Wine, bread, cheese, and Frenchmen! Sold! French men are sexy, and they do know their way around the bedroom. We have firsthand and secondhand knowledge. The nation celebrates marriage equality and a strong nightlife scene, particularly in Paris. We've been to Paris and can attest that there are eager gay men from the cafes to the bars to the catacombs.
The report shows that social acceptance of queer folk is slipping in Canada, Australia, and Denmark.
FYI, the US ranks #47 on the list. The US remains divided, where some states rank very high, but the average is brought down by conservative states. Especially states trying to establish anti-trans and anti-gay laws.
And, according to the Gay Index, the following nations are at the very bottom of the list, and extremely dangerous for gay travel: Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, South Sudan, Tanzania, Turkmenistan, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Uganda, Somalia, Afghanistan, Chechnya, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Yemen.
We'll be back with a report on the US Travel Index. Stay tuned!
