The celebration of St. Patrick's Day falls on the day of St. Patrick's death. Christians in Ireland started to celebrate the day back in the 9th and 10th centuries. As the holiday falls during the Catholic season of Lent - when the religious give up things in preparation for Easter - the day was celebrated by going to church in the morning, and then partying in the afternoon, with the restrictions of Lent lifted for that one day. Everyone danced and drank and ate. In the 17th century, settlers in the Americas continued the tradition, adding their own spin - like corned beef and parades. Though the holiday started off as religious, it has become wildly secular. You really don't need to give people that much of an excuse to party.
