Pro Basketball Player AJ Oglivy Comes Out As Gay
Oh....the straight sports fans are clutching their pearls! Another gay athlete has come out of the closet. We are taking over!!! This year, we are happy to report that we have shared many coming-out stories from queer athletes. We have a long way to go in terms of queer representation in sports, but we are slowly but surely making our visibility grow. Australiian hottie and former bro basketball player AJ Oglivy came out this last week in an interview celebrating the upcoming Pride Round for Australia's National Basketball League (the equivalent of our NBA). Pride Round is an annual event that celebrates the queer community, now in its 4th year.

AJ Olgivy came out during an interview with the NBA's only other out gay athlete, Isaac Humphries. AJ stated that there is now a place for queer athletes to come out and be their true selves. This is thanks to the many trailblazers who have come out openly in a not to so queer friendly industry. You can check out the coming-out interview here:
AJ retired in 2022 and led a private life while presenting as a straight man during his time playing for the Sydney Kings. In actuality, he has been married to his partner for about a decade. He tells the story that many queer athletes tell, that he didn't see any positive gay representation or relationships in sports, or in the media as a whole, for that matter. He credits Isaac Humphries for finding the strength to finally come out publicly.

Many fans have commented on social media that the success of HBO Max's Heated Rivalry is really opening up the conversation about queer athletes in sports. Last week, we reported that hockey player Jesse Kortuem came out as gay, inspired by the show. Perhaps the show will be responsible for a wave of coming out.
Humphries remarked on the importance of AJ coming out, stating, “It’s not about forcing or anything, it’s just a bit of visibility for a community. Everybody is welcome. Basketball is such a universal space and universal game; why wouldn’t we also celebrate this community?”
AJ is already using his platform to spread the word and speak about queer representation through the media.
