Elaina St. James isn't your typical OnlyFans creator that you hear about in those viral stories. She's not a barely legal bop dancing on TikTok, but the insane amount of money she's made on OnlyFans proves that there's not just one type of girl who can make it big online.

“I was always told early on that a woman has a shelf life when it comes to being attractive, and that was around 40,” she said. “You have one value, and it’s your looks. When I lost the life I thought I was supposed to have, I had to start completely over.”

Elaina St. James says she once aspired to be what modern social media now calls a “trad wife,” short for traditional wife, devoted to homemaking, child-rearing, and serving her husband’s needs.

“I was living with him. I was taking care of everything — everything a traditional wife would take care of,” she recalled. “I was building a home for us and for our future children.”

But her relationship began to crumble under what she describes as controlling behavior. After a trial separation, she says, the end came abruptly when an email from her partner ended the relationship for good.

“I’ve never spoken to him since,” she said. “What do you do when you get an email like that? I was absolutely floored.”

At 40, unmarried and childless, Elaina St. James says she faced the collapse of the life she had envisioned.

Struggling financially, she worked a series of low-paying jobs to support herself and her son, whom she conceived through sperm donation. Then, in early 2021, she stumbled across a magazine story about a woman earning six figures on OnlyFans.

“At first I thought it was a scam,” she said. “But I couldn’t stop researching it. I was fascinated — people were actually doing this and making real money.”

That spring, she launched her own OnlyFans page. By leaning into her age, she found a niche audience and success followed. She now earns well into the six figures annually, with fans drawn to her confidence and maturity.

But the transition came with a cost. She says she has received harassment and violent threats, and that her work has affected how people treat her in everyday life.

“Even my son’s teachers started acting differently toward me,” she said.

Still, she insists she has no regrets.

“I wouldn’t trade this for the subservient housewife role I once wanted,” she said. “I learned that as long as you’re alive, you can reinvent yourself.”

Elaina St. James'  journey from aspiring homemaker to independent entrepreneur highlights the contradictory pressures facing women today, caught between competing ideals of tradition, independence, and financial survival.

“The rise of both trad wives and OnlyFans models comes from the same place,” she observed. “People are scared right now. It’s harder to live as a single woman. Trad wives look for stability through marriage, and women like me turn to platforms like OnlyFans for the same reason — financial security.”

Now, she says she sees her experience as both a cautionary tale and a message of hope.

“Nothing is permanent, and that’s both the good and the bad news,” she said. “You can lose everything and still build something better. At some point, you realize your happiness is more important than someone else’s idea of what your life should be.”
