Established Couple Love Apps Will Keep Us Together

EDITORIAL FEATURES

Apps That Help Couples Keep Their Love Alive.

Love. Everybody wants some but it can be elusive. Once we find it, we have to figure out how to keep it fresh, healthy, happy, and horny. Time brings about physical, emotional, and psychological changes. Marriage, handfasting, or commitment ceremony. Fertility decisions and accidents. Pregnancy, birth, stillbirth, parenting, and menopause. The aging and death of parents, siblings, contemporaries, and pets. Disease, disability, wealth, poverty, the realization or abandonment of dreams. Over the years, so many things test the bonds of even the most devoted love.

There are a multitude of websites, apps, and services to facilitate single adults who want to meet others for sex or romance. Other than the religiously based Marriage Encounter weekends, expensive Human Awareness Institute workshops, joint counseling sessions, and Cosmopolitan, where can pair-bonded adults go to strengthen their love connection? No matter how happy the couple, there is always room for improvement.

Apps for Loving Couples

Agape: Even after two years of Classical Greek in college, when I see the word “agape” I think about religion. The word means everything from God’s love for humanity to a selfless, enduring, and non-erotic love. I have not found anything overtly religious on Agape, but I have found a lot of people online saying that it’s a great app for couples, especially those who are far apart, want to stay emotionally connected, and are willing to learn more about themselves and their partner. Subscribers link accounts and then receive an identical relationship-related question each day to answer. Each then submits their answer and compares it to their spouse’s. Topics range from sex, romance, parenting, finances, health, gratitude, and, yes, religion. There are also games, even more questions to spark discussion, a scrapbook for memories to share, and points earned for monthly giveaways. Free and Paid options.

Couple Joy: The more you look at couple-focused apps the more you realize that too many couples don’t know each other very well, in part because they don’t talk to each other very well. Couple Joy is one of many apps that aim to change that for the better, regardless of whether the couple is far apart or geographically co-located. With the use of widgets, members can keep track of physical distance, days as a couple, upcoming celebrations, and more. Questionnaires that lead to “Deep Conversation” are available, as are those that focus on “Would You Rather” and “Never Have I Ever” topic prompts. Additionally, members can read helpful articles about long-distance relationships, holiday date suggestions, gift-giving ideas, and more. Populate a relationship journal with photos and notes, share answers to your daily question, and relax in the knowledge that your info will not be shared with other companies or organizations. Straight and queer friendly. Free and Paid options.

Love Nudge: If you grooved on Gary Chapman’s book The 5 Love Languages, then Love Nudge’s “personal assistant for your relationship” app will be even groovier. It is common for people to feel love for their partner but not understand how to express it in a way they find emotionally meaningful. Some people crave touch, others thrive on supportive, encouraging words. Time together without distraction reinforces the love vibe for many. Thoughtful gifts or acts of kindness can also lead to and reinforce a powerful connection. A sign-on quiz helps each partner determine their personal “love language,” as both a love giver and receiver. With this info, the couple can then set goals for learning how to ask for and express love more effectively. Thanks to something called the “Love Tank,” they can also keep track of how full of love they feel at any particular moment. Low levels mean it’s time for a love infusion in the needed language. Free with Paid options.

Paired: Regardless of how long you’ve been partnered, there’s always more to learn about the one you love. That may seem strange in an age of mobile devices and instant communication, but high tech has not always been a friend to couple stability. Paired is aware of screen addiction and aims to use it and a collection of relationship experts to help increase couple intimacy as a “way to connect with your partner every day.” To do this, the app focuses mostly on jump-starting conversations of substance both on and offline. It can also help rekindle romance, if that’s needed. Daily questions, games, quizzes, and articles about money, sex, intimacy, dates, meaning, desires, conflict resolution, communication, and, yes, love, help you “get to know your partner in new ways.” Straight and queer friendly. Free and Paid options.

Spicer: The website for Spicer calls it an “App for Couples” and promises to “Improve Communications with Your Partner.” Sounds pretty basic. Scroll down and you will find out that the topic you will be improving your communication about will be sex. Even today, surrounded by sexual images used to sell everything from yogurt to sports cars, couples struggle to honestly share their sexual thoughts, experiences, preferences, boundaries, and desires. Repression, inhibition, fear of rejection, embarrassment, shame, disinformation, and lack of information all make it harder for couples to have the kind of sexual and emotional intimacy they crave. The app serves up sex questions intended to spark conversations and maybe even exploration. Spicer does not get any spicier than its members want, though. There are various levels of heat to choose from, and users can contribute their own questions from mild to wild. There are “Sex Dares,” private chat rooms, a “Sex Tracker” calendar, and 24-hour sex assignments to keep things lively. Available in English, German, Russian, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. Free with Paid options.
