Throwback Thursday: Bicycle Day and 420 Edition: Your High Holidays Playlist

POP CULTURE

Rejoice, rejoice, the high holidays are here, and 4/20 falls on a Saturday this year! Hey, that rhymes!

Hey Fleshbot fans! It’s about to be Bicycle Day and 4/20 again for all of those interested in celebrating such things, and I’m actually going to stick to mainstream movies for this year's Throwback Thursday list of recommended viewing. I’m going to highlight some of my favorite stoner movies, trippy psychedelic movies, and general movies to watch while high, picking titles that you can find to watch at least one major streaming service (at press time) because who wants to dig through all your DVDs? If you click any of those links, you’ll find lists of many more to choose from if you disagree with my choices. Personally, I’ll be busy doing a Pagan ritual on most of 4/20. A friend used the phrase “Loki blunt” which she’s planning to share before said ritual and we will see if I survive her creation.

Dazed And Confused (1993) can be found on Peacock and brings us a snapshot of a particular time period and all of the accompanying coming-of-age struggles. It’s got a cast that includes Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, and Milla Jovovich (who shows up later on this list as well) and a really great soundtrack to boot.

Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle (2004) can be found on Tubi and it’s just a fun road/buddy movie about the weed-soaked quest for those deliciously horrible little burgers. The kind they have in the frozen food section will just not do. I once enjoyed a large sack of White Castle burgers in Vegas while legally high and watching this movie. I planned this, because I’m a dork at heart.

Those first two are lighter goofy stoner comedy. Once you’re pretty baked and perhaps have enjoyed other complementary substances, moving into large visual spectacles can be a good time.

The Fifth Element (1997) on Hulu is a futuristic sci-fi adventure where a cab driver played by Bruce Willis needs to team up with an enigmatic female passenger to save the world. No pressure or anything.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), available on Max, was something I needed to watch for a film class in college, before I was a stoner (I’m a late bloomer), and I really found most of it confusing and boring that time, but it’s definitely improved by substances and the “star child” part of the film is pretty awesome.

Doctor Strange (2016) is of course part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and found on Disney+. It’s a visual feast for the eyes and a compelling origin story for the titular character, not to mention the scrumptious Benedict Cumberbatch.

Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams (1990) can be found on Tubi and was first brought to my attention by Weird Movie Boyfriend and it’s a series of eight vignettes where the famous Japanese director brings his dreams to life by magical realist filmmaking. Some of it’s gorgeous, some of it’s terrifying, and honestly everything in between, too.

Now that we’ve figured out some options for viewing material, snacks are pretty essential as well and who better to help us with that than queer food creator Nicole on her TikTok channel @dope kitchen. Go check out her entire channel and build your grocery list.

Enjoy the days responsibly-- we want you around a long time to keep reading all our smutty yammerings here at Fleshbot. Remember to stock up on chocolate before next year’s 4/20, because Easter falls on 4/20 in 2025!
