French Fashion House Renews Complaint About Porn Trademark
International fashion giant Christian Dior Couture knows that porn exists and it’s happy to use sex to sell its luxury perfumes, garments, watches, neckties, scarves, jewelry, handbags, gloves, hosiery, furs, cosmetics, and lingerie. But it is not happy to think someone somewhere might confuse it with porn or, in this case, a porn star. Gigi Dior, to be exact.
In the adult industry for about four years now, Gigi was minding her own naked business and making a name for herself as a “hot MILF” when she found out who Hien Tran Trung is. He’s the Chief Financial Officer for Dior. The fashion giant, not the porn performer. According to Trung, when the French fashion house learned that now 42-year-old Gigi had registered to trademark her professional name in 2021 and the trademark was granted in 2022, a huge injustice occurred, and the victim is the company that pocketed a neat 15.75-billion-dollar profit that year.
Dior the French fashion house wants the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to reverse its decision, which would leave Gigi in the lurch to rebrand herself and all related media and marketing. Trung has claimed that Gigi’s use of the French-derived word for gold will cause confusion among consumers of their high-class products. If the trademark is not retroactively denied, Trung fears that his company’s reputation for luxury and sophistication will be diluted, tarnished, and degraded.
The matter was briefly suspended during the summer of 2023 but Dior the fashion brand has since lodged a declaration with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) and Trung has further explained how he believes the company will be damaged by Gigi’s continued use of the name.
According to The Fashion Law, Trung claims Gigi should be denied her federal trademark or service mark registration, “along with its presumptions of exclusive rights, in a DIOR-formative trademark, [as] such a registration would interfere with the exclusive rights Dior has carefully developed over many years in its DIOR trademark and could impede Dior’s ability to expand its trademark registration portfolio to additional service mark classes in the future.”
Like it or not, newbie MILF Gigi Dior’s name is going down in the fashion giant’s history along with its celebrity ambassadors including Charlize Theron, Mila Kunis, Yara Shahidi, Kim Jisoo, Mila Jovovich, and Natalie Portman. Ironically, several of these women have done nude scenes in mainstream movies.
