Why I Love Porn: A Deeper Look

Why I Love Porn: A Deeper Look

My initial interest in porn was just like everybody else's: curiosity and a desire to get off to the visual appeal of pornography. I expect that’s as far as most people ever go with adult films. But even as a new fan, porn struck a deeper chord in me. There's more to this porn thing than meets the eye. There was a deeper reason why I love porn.

I already wrote about how paying for porn changed my life. Adult films were so captivating and so important to me that I walked away from work in tech, sports, and the ever-evolving gaming sector to focus on adult industry work and studies.

Porn resonated with me. It was a passion that I felt compelled to pursue. and I only just began to understand why.

Pornography Spans Interests

As a child of the ‘80s and ‘90s, I grew up on music videos and independent filmmaking. I love creative cinematography as an art unto itself. Think of the way Kubrick sets a shot as though it were a still photograph. Or conversely, the way Ridley Scott throws you into the action with frantic close-ups and handheld shots. Or what about the way Spielberg tells the story through camera pans and blocking.

My first serious foray into adult film took me on a deep dive into Andrew Blake’s filmmaking They were breathtaking art-porn films centered around what Blake called the “sexually fashionable.” While I may not be well-versed in the world of fashion, I’m fascinated by provocative and creative new looks. From Bowie to Gaga, I’m in.

But I’m also a student of sexuality. I love to learn about how people become aroused, various kinks, and methods of expressing one’s sexuality. I have a keen interest in the mechanics of sexual positions along with how and why they work. That goes hand in hand with masturbation techniques, oral sex, as well as pleasure management, particularly for men and how they go about controlling their finish–something that reliable pornstars must master.

That dovetails right into my fascination with human sexual response. I grapple with understanding the variety of ways the body responds to sexual stimuli, and what happens approaching, during, and after orgasm.

Along those lines, I find great beauty in the sight and sound of women cumming. It’s a personal interest that stretches back to my early exposure to Ron Harris’ orgasm studies from the early 2000’s. A concept that Petre Hegre has continued through his art films to this day.

Sexual expression is also dear to my heart. That sort of ties into fashion, as I’m curious how people explore and demonstrate their sexuality through appearance. I’m genuinely curious about what people are trying to say through their outfits and why.

Naturally, my experience with porn affords a deeper look into expression. How do we continue to express sexuality once the clothes come off? As a performer, how do you then translate that sexuality into a pornographic performance consistent with the director’s vision, and respecting the presence of the camera? And in that context, what is your pornographic style and influence? These are the questions I grapple with.

So when I see a quality pornographic performance, it hits me on all these levels. Yes, it’s sexy, but it’s also uniquely beautiful, engaging my brain both academically and analytically. It captivates my interest like nothing else.

Porn is Music to My Eyes

I often compare porn to music, and that’s not me trying to be poetic. It's one of the reasons why I love porn. Once you’ve spent enough time studying and unpacking pornographic films, the parallels are clear. You only have so many notes which are arranged and repeated. Sometimes it’s in different rhythms, sometimes in different orders or time signatures, but there’s only so much variety that these basic building blocks offer. And indeed, many songs follow the same chord progression. Ed Sheerhan just won a lawsuit about it.

Despite having a whole Kama Sutra of sex positions, there are only a handful of positions and angles that work well in a porn shoot. And even fewer progressions that resonate with viewers. And yet, despite most porn scenes sharing a common pattern, and in some cases even being technically identical, you still wind up with a lot of soul.

Just like music, great porn comes from the heart. The magic lies in how the porn is performed “in the pocket.” Rhythm, pace, and genuine human chemistry differentiate one performance from the next. And when it all comes together just right, you’ve got a hit. And fans will watch it again and again and again!

Porn is Diverse

I could watch porn all day and often do. I love it. For me, it’s the diversity of porn that keeps me engaged.

We have so many genres, artists, and filmmakers eager to use the canvas of sexuality to paint their masterpieces. With so many moving parts, crewmembers, performers, and more; every pornography is unique.

It’s fascinating to go on these deep dives into specific styles. Or to pick one performer and study their traits and technique across a multitude of genres from glamcore to hardcore, or girl-girl to gangbang. What about parodies, sci-fi, and even drama? Yup, porn has that too.

Here’s the thing. Porn isn’t just about the ole’ old in-out. I know that’s what draws most of us to the genre, and it’s beautiful. I love sex, and I love seeing people have sex, but there’s more to it.

Porn is Fresh

I’ve been writing about porn for over fifteen years now. I’ve probably viewed a minimum of 16,000 hours of porn in that time, and probably much more. In all that time, porn has always seemed fresh and new. But how can that be?

The porn meta is constantly evolving, and each new artist puts their own unique spin on it. And if you zoom out, you can see how the porn of yesteryear is vastly different from that of today. From '70s cheesecore, to Vivid's glam, to the height of gonzo porn, and more. Each generation makes it their own.

I’ve learned that the state of the art is change. That’s what inspires me about porn. That’s the reason I can’t wait to see what comes out tomorrow. It’s always new, creative, and inspired. That’s what keeps me coming back for more, and why I love porn.
