Popular image hosting and sharing platform Imgur will no longer host explicit content on its platform starting May 15. Imgur plans to update its terms of service saying that the company will focus on removing “nudity, pornography, & sexually explicit content” from the site. They are encouraging their users to save/download their explicit content if they wish to keep it before all explicit content is removed from the platform.
In a recent blog post explaining their decision, Imgur says "explicit and illegal content have historically posed a risk to Imgur's community and its business, disallowing explicit content will allow Imgur to address these risks and protect the future of the Imgur community."
So, why would this be trending on Reddit? Imgur's updated terms of service might impact several NSFW subreddits where posters rely on the platform to host their album of explicit content. Reddit didn't always support image uploads, and many users depended on Imgur to upload images and then share on Reddit.
Even though Reddit now supports image uploads, many Redditors still rely on Imgur when posting NSFW content, especially gifs and videos. For instance, the wildly popular subreddit r/RedditGoneWild has pinned a post saying "Bye Bye Imgur (May 15th)" to remind its community of 4.4 million followers of the upcoming change. Another subreddit, r/nsfw, pinned a post letting it's community of 4 million how and where to post after May 15th.
Since the news of Imgur's new terms of service broke, Redditors have been discussing what posting NSFW content will be like on Reddit after May 15th. It'll be interesting to see how posting on Reddit will unfold in the upcoming weeks!
