This rightfully belongs in the “well yeah, duh,” category but sometimes the obvious is obscured by moralizing and shame. Thanks to the liberalizing of society, an increasing number of people are able to access information and tools that can improve their sexual health and pleasure. Getting a man to locate, let alone stimulate, a clitoris has been a battle for women longer than we may realize. For instance, in spite of all the naked men and phallic statuary, the clitoris did not get the same kind of positive attention from the ancient Greeks or Romans. In fact, one author of an early anatomy book recommended surgical removal of any ‘kleitoris’ that was too obvious or pronounced. In a society that has problems talking about sex even among those of an age perceived as appropriate for the activity, the thought of an elder still getting jiggy in the sheets is hard to wrap our heads around. A study conducted last year in Belgium with couples over the age of 70 produced evidence that we’d better get over our agism and inhibitions because, while many have retired their libidos, an impressive number of older folks still enjoy solo and partnered sex of all kinds. Being able to discard inhibitions and irrational fears in order to truly enjoy sexuality is a goal that many of us hope to attain at some point.
