After attending the AVN Awards show and being persuaded into considering a career in the adult industry, Leo Vice started to work on a business plan.
Do you think that breaking into the industry in your 30s influenced your perspective and process?
“Yes, maturity helps you understand and see things a little bit differently. Once you’ve been in business for a while, you realize that this is business; everything is business. And if you operate yourself like a business, you can be successful.”
You have talked about how important it is to have a strategy. You mentioned having a marketing, branding and exit plan. How has this influenced your trajectory in the industry?
“Having all that keeps me focused. Eyes on the prize kind of situation… When you’re running things on your own and are in charge of yourself, having already figured out what the branding and image are keeps me focused and on track. The exit strategy is about not just focusing on today but on the big picture.
The exit strategy is also about not just thinking about today. It’s about keeping your eye on the big picture and thinking about what the next step is and how to get there. That way you also know what to do once you get there. If you execute everything properly, life should be pretty smooth at that point… as always with life, things will get in the way and there will be obstacles but knowing what you’re trying to do helps. Even if the plan changes, the goal is the same.
When you have a blueprint, it’s also easier to age gracefully in the industry. If you know what you want to do after acting, you spend less time floating around and actually do the thing.”
Do you think that having certain skills from previous business experiences helped you build this career on your own?
“It definitely helps. If you have an idea, you are able to execute it. But I’ve seen a lot of people who don’t have the same technical background but had the vision and the ideas. It costs a little bit more to have someone else do it but it works.”
Do you have any advice for people coming into the industry?
“The main advice I have is: This is a business. It can be a very fun business… but you also have to think about how you’re going to market yourself, brand yourself, find your audience, distribute the content you create, monetize things… these are things people don’t typically think about. So that’s my advice, if you want to do it, think of it as a business.”
