Have A Good Funeral, My Friend…The Hammer Will Pay: “Inglorious Bastards 2: Hell Heroes” (1987)

XCRITIC

Rushed
onto DVD to ride the publicity wave generated by Quentin Tarantino's
"Inglourious Basterds" update, this Video Asia release combines
Italian director Stelvio Massi's "Inglorious Bastards 2: Hell Heroes"
with three other European war epics for a small retail price.

Best
known as the guiding hand behind the "Sartana" series of Spaghetti
Westerns in the 1960s (particularly the chilling "Have A Good Funeral My
Friend...Sartana Will Pay"), Massi seems oddly out of his element here; the
only cast member returning from Enzo G. Castalleri's "The Inglorious
Bastards" is Fred Williamson. The wildly improbably storyline finds
"The Hammer" having graduated from World War 2 to Vietnam without
appearing a day older, the "plot" is just some blather about G.I.s
breaking out of the stockade after being framed for the assasination of a
senator played by Chuck Connors.

Massi
often served as his own cinematographer and performs his camera chores
admirably here. Sadly, his slick visuals are undone by a talky script and a
typically muddy transfer by Video Asia.

The
other pictures included in the set include "Warbus 2,"
"Apocalypse Mercenaries," and Italian exploitation icon Umberto
Lenzi's "Bridge To Hell."

Ironically,
it's the Lenzi film, with its humorous take on WW2 G.I.s behind enemy lines and
the sexy/tragic heroine they encounter along the way that far more accurately
foreshadows Tarantino's 2009 take on the bastards' legacy...
