Behind the Pink Door: The '70s and '80s
Welcome, dear Readers, to the wonderful, fun-filled world of feminist pornography! I'm Goldenmuse, and this is my second butt kicking, epic, multipart tribute to the 'her'story of femme porn, focusing this week on the classics, some of which are still absent on the shelves at your local porn-itoriums.
In 1974, a female filmmaker accomplished a cinematic feat; one that also merits consideration as a true feminist milestone. She directed, wrote, produced, edited and photographed a film that addressed the situation of women in the world. Another somewhat shocking factoid? This movie was a porno.
Angel on Fire, the creation of filmmaker Roberta Findlay, concerned a chauvinist playboy who -- after being killed in a car accident that could only happen in a porno (the driver was distracted by a rather thorough blowjob, administered by his passenger), he is reincarnated by a woman; one who must deal with real-life feminine issues such as abortion and emotional heartbreak. Findlay's work, while not the highly artistic, romantic fantasy that one associates with feminist porn, nonetheless set the stage for this genre; one that now stakes a substantial claim in the adult market (and the theme was later explored in the mainstream movie Switch, starring Ellen Barkin and Jimmy Smits).
The '70s and '80s, in fact, marked a time of sexual renaissance for women. Playgirl magazine debuted in 1973, and the first PG videos (the soft-core Playgirl On the Air series) debuted in the mid'80s. These videos featured centerfold scenes, fantasy sequences, and model profiles, providing women of that time with their first dose of 'eye candy.' The first hardcore example of the femme porn genre was the
appropriately titled Femme; a rich, vivid exploration of female fantasies directed by none other than Candida Royalle in 1984. Truly a first among equals, Royalle began her landmark directorial career in the 1980s. Aside from Femme, she brought us Rites of Passion, Three Daughters, Urban Heat, A Taste of Ambrosia, Christine's Secret, and Sensual Escape, during this time.

Elsewhere in the '80s, even mainstream porn films began to acknowledge the needs and desires of the female viewer. We began to see handsome actors such as Francois Papillon and Peter North; porn actors who looked more like male models/actors than mangled morphine addicts (score!). Several of these actors, in fact, were featured in California Gigolo (a.k.a The Touchables), a 1987 film about a brothel that catered exclusively to women. This stud-for-hire concept also was explored in the 1984 film "Babylon Blue" Babylon Blue and in a 1979 film -- also titled California Gigolo-- that starred John Holmes.

Scenes for Loving Couples a variety of top adult stars were seen in their most romantic, erotic scenes from the '70s and '80s. And in 1985, two women penned the script for Looking For Mr. Goodsex, a film about two female magazine editors seeking the perfect stud for an upcoming layout. And, true 'model testers' that they are, they personally audition each hunk.
In 1986, hunks like Francois Papillon and Buck Adams took to the stage as male strippers in Jerome Tanner's Club Exotica a film specifically geared toward the fulfillment of women's fantasies. Another prominent adult actor who emerged during this time was Jeff

Just as women came out of the kitchen to make their way in the business world, adult filmmakers exited the smoky confines of stag parties and back alley theaters to create sophisticated films with substantial budgets. Adult Toy Talk: Pumping it Up with Top Gauge
The concept of increasing the size of one's Tiny Dancer will intrigue men until either the end of time or some sort of evolutionary genital jump. That pump mechanism is especially nice, as its hand-pump design allows for easy use, while the quick-release is well-positioned. The best feature is the gauge on top, which shows you just how pumped up you are. It's important to keep an eye on that, but your cock will tell you all you need to know, as a few quick pumps gives a very tight grip.
The canister features a rubber sleeve on the bottom that, with a bit of applied pressure, helps form a nice seal around the base of your member. Watching your junk grow larger with each pump is an exhilarating experience, but hit that release, and you see those gains were short-lived. Admittedly, it makes you look bigger while flaccid, but if you are looking to add legitimate size, this won't do it for you. In fact, nothing is likely to. If you're looking for a pump that does just what you'd expect, this is a good one, but you might find yourself equally satisfied by an economy model.

Lacking any contract stars didn't prove unlucky for Teen America: Mission #13 at all as our team found the volume full of great scenes, hot women, and the kind of technical values often missing from gonzo porn. With a cast including Jasmine Byrne, Jamie Huxley, Claire Robbins, Sativa Rose, and Bianca Pureheart (not to mention Chris Charming & Scott Nails for you ladies out there), director Robby D. threw down the gauntlet once more to challenge his peers to provide something more than just the usual circus act sex, although there was anal in this volume and no condoms to get in the way of your fun. Future volumes look to be equally interesting in terms of cast choices but the bottom line is that this award winning series once again struck gold in terms of sexual energy and heat.
In Caribbean Dream, our own Mistress Liss asks the question, "How many times have you been on vacation and wished you could live there forever?" as she explores the latest flick from Private Tropical by famed director Alessandro Del Mar. She concluded by telling us that; "I thought this was a great film and will watch it again. The photo quality was good and I loved the scene with Veronica, Katia, and Philippe in the water. If you love beautiful scenery and even more beautiful bodies, than this is the movie for you." In terms of couples appeal, this was one of the true picks of the week. In a similar beach themed title, South Beach Invasion, Don pointed out that "the action and technical values combined to showcase the performers nicely, as they sucked and fucked their way through their scenes" and that the DVD had "some solid replay value", although I'm sure he'd admit that the Private release used substantially scenery appeal as it showcased the ladies.
This week also saw a couple of titles made for those wanting something different than the usual formulaic porn with Vouyer Media's first title, The Gauntlet, and Joanna's Angels #2, where the queen of goth/alt-porn herself, Joanna Angel, proves she's not just a flash in the pan (even participating in our forums of late). The Gauntlet was especially notable for the cover girl, Maya Hills, in one of her rare scenes, swallowing numerous loads as she walked the gauntlet of rooms in the house in order to fill every nook and cranny of her body. It also marks the return to gonzo porn of director Vince Vouyer, one of the most recognized names in porn, where he provides a rare bonus scene with Joanna Angel to compliment her pick hit of the week. That said, the comedy of the feature release Joanna's Angels proved to enhance the decidedly alternative looking cast as they spoofed the mainstream Charlie's Angels with the same lowbrow humor they employed in the original flick. Fan's of Joanna will want both of them even though each caters to a significantly different crowd but they both proved to be worth looking into.
While many titles have anal sex in them these days, our team looks for the ones where the women are especially hot to look at and into the action as much as possible. A quick glance at the backside of Simone Style in Up'R Class 3 might've drew Don's attention but it was the performances by the excellent cast consisting of Michelle Lay, Pat Myne, Shy Love, Mark Davis, Mr. Pete, Simone Style, Mick Blue, Venus, Mark Wood, and Vanessa Lane. Suggesting it had "had plenty of fuck for the buck with the kind of replay value most of us wish were commonplace in porn these days", his oft-jaded look at porn was overcome by the kind of performances they showed, and even those he was typically didn't care for proved to be exceptional this time. On the other hand, Kylie Ireland's Open For Anal 2, had a bevy of beauties Don has routinely admired for their past work; including sexual powerhouse Kylie herself, along with Flower Tucci, Barbara Summers, Sandra Romain, Trinity Post, and Mia Bangg. With a cast that skilled, there's no doubt that fans of anal queens everywhere will want to pick up a copy (especially since Kylie shows that passion doesn't stop when you turn 30).
Our next section deals with the genre of youth, with looks into interracial and lesbian action, in Hustler's Little White Girls, Young and Tasty, and Miss Strap On. Little White Girls showed a number of lesser known young ladies working out big loads from some of the darkest meat this side of downtown Detroit. While the extras weren't great and the technical matters weren't the best we've seen in recent months, the raw energy provided us enough reason to appreciate this Hustler offering more than most of their work. Contrast that to the scenes in Metro's Young and Tasty, where the technical matters limited the incredibly, perhaps "unbelievably" attractive cast that enjoyed passionate sex, showing both companies that a mix of both might really benefit sales, if not consumer satisfaction. Lastly, fans of lesbian gang bangs will find Smash Pictures' answer to Pussy Party, a revealing one as new director Daniel Dakota was given a sweet cast of hotties to work with in a single scene lasting the better part of 80 minutes. Fans of strap on dildos, much like foam wrestling aficionados, will find this one a nice balance between some of the ultra hardcore material on the market and the erotica made for the faint of heart.
Last, but certainly not least this week, was a horde of titles from the top producer of gonzo porn Evil Angel. The star driven epic of John Leslie, Naomi: There's Only One, showed one of our favorite newcomers (Naomi in her first recorded anal scene) in every scene led the pack. The return of Rocco Siffredi's desire to showcase attractive women over the bizarre material he has been offering of late was a pleasant surprise in Rocco's Dirty Dreams 2. Christoph Clark took another look at the darker side of fetish material in Euro Domination #6: Take That Bitch!, one of the most fetish oriented titles available domestically these days. This was followed by Jonni Darkko's Bet Your Ass 3, where he wasn't quite at his best in terms of casting and ability to showcase the ladies but seemed to find just the right way to look at Jasmine Byrne, Tory Lane, and Flower Tucci with his decadent eye for detail. In another foreign offering, though much closer to home, Erik Everhard's directorial debut for Evil Angel, Canadian Beaver: Special Extended Edition, showed why a road trip to Canada should be considered by our review staff as Don pointed out how great the Great White North really was with four and a half hours of movie to enjoy. With such a solid selection of directors, is it any wonder why Evil Angel succeeds so often as smaller companies drop off the map?
Overlooked Titles
Suggesting the movie was "more than the sum of its parts", reviewer Don Houston pointed out Devon: Erotique as something special due to the "the sheer quality of presentation, the exceptional cast, the diversity of style in the settings" even though he wasn't happy with the manner in which style sometimes overrode his desire to hear the vocals and see the ladies in full motion. Still, for the type of porno you can watch with a significant other and enjoy mutual satisfaction, this might've proved to be the swan song of former contract star Devon at Digital Playground, but came across as a veritable sexual resume for the lady to provide her new employer. If you're looking for style of presentation, you could do far worse than this one (and it didn't hurt having an all star supporting cast either).
Next up was Michael Vega's look at the Private compilation, Private Colors. This was another of the four movie compilations that Private had started offering in recent years, taking four older titles and releasing them as a single DVD set with a lower price point. Some of the movies weren't even that old this time but the benefit most of you will find is how well this package serves fans of ladies from a diverse set of backgrounds, showcasing blacks, Asians, Latinas, and even whites with more fuck for your buck than you'll be able to get through in a month (unless you're a hyped up pervert like some of our staff that is).
Reviewer Namrufmot seemed enthusiastic about Cum Swappers 2, a title he commented "girls are all very attractive, and the sex is off the scales" even if the technical matters weren't up to snuff. This was an early title for new contract star McKenzie Lee so fans might want to pick it up if they find a sale but the fact is that the gals all engaged in cumswapping fun that you generally don't get to see from top end talent these days.
One of the earlier titles in Evil Angel's expansion of the "fuck for the buck" wars, Jules Jordan's Flesh Hunter 8: Special Edition was described as "easily worth a rating of Highly Recommended and fans of the cast may even think that's a little light given the variety of stuff they did as well as how much went on. In essence, there was more heated screwing on this DVD set than you'll find on almost any two discs from the competition. While Jules could work on polishing up some of the technical matters, I have no doubt that John Stagliano brought him onboard the Evil Angel bandwagon for his vision of what works in porn as well as all the little things he does so well. With several standout performances and most of the rest being first class "bone-a-thons" too, fans will find this one has more fuck for the buck than they are likely to find almost anywhere outside Evil Angel itself. Flesh Hunter 8 is enough to keep even the most jaded of you busy for a long, long time." The casting was nearly perfect and the sum total of fuck for the buck clocked in at around five hours on this two disc set. Is it any wonder why Jules has been crowned as king of gonzo in recent years?
The Mooninite found another multi-disc set worthy of attention with Becoming Georgia Adair 3 when he pointed out: "This recent release from Ninn Worx is a look into the life and career of porno starlet Georgia Adair as only Michael Ninn could do it. Spread out over two discs, the set serves not only as a traditional smut film but also as an interesting glimpse into the woman's word both inside and outside the adult movie making business (but thankfully mostly inside!). It's always a treat when an adult film turns out to be more than you expected. It's rare to find artistic merit in a lot of this type of material but Ninn Worx once again proves that explicit pornography can be classy and it can look professional and it can have an interesting soundtrack. The first disc is an interesting look at the performers and their work, and the second disc delivers the goods with the hardcore smut. Together they add up to a very solid release that comes highly recommended."
Goldenmuse was the latest reviewer on Earth to be infatuated by the beauty of Fire and Ice, saying it was: "A beautiful blend of artistic themes, romantic situations and blistering erotica, "Fire and Ice" is the ultimate couple's video" before saying: "OK, now that I've disposed with the fancy descriptions required of every female adult reviewer, let me make one thing perfectly clear: Evan Stone looks incredible in this film. Painfully gorgeous. Yeah baby. Much like the artwork that serves as its subject, "Fire and Ice" is truly a thing of beauty. The acting, dialogue and production values are uniformly excellent, and it's the rare production that appeals equally to women, men and couples." The movie was a solid hit and notable for providing the debut of Tera Patrick, long before she became a sought after contract starlet on the rise to fame and infamy in porn.
Last up is a look at Goo 4 Two by Rob Randell where he found the concept of cumswapping to be of particular interest when he described the movie as "a very hot gonzo release. In it a pair of sexy Euro-babes team up against a guy or two. They have some great sex with action that ranges from oral to vaginal to anal to double penetration. In the next few weeks we expect to get early glimpses of some of the finest porn available. One of the most promising appears to be Control #2, the latest Robby D. release in his Control series that we've found especially excellent. Elegant Angel proved to anything but elegant when we got our first look at the type of show provided by Tits, Young, Ripe and Real! for a review coming soon. But that's not all, there's anal, squirting, gaping and oh yes, more gigantic tittie madness!" but the casting with the gorgeous Gianna on the front cover was more than we could hope for given the amount of silicone most gals choose to use in modern porn. Other upcoming titles of interest include Sex on the Beach, a title that goes far beyond the classic pick up drink found in bars everywhere. The Suze Randall production has an all star cast, including gals like Lanny Barby, with the kind of stylish direction the company has been building a name on in recent years. We'll leave it up to the Mooninite to tell you the details but it may take a couple extra days due to the impressive amount of top level gals in scenes where they showed more than a little passion.
