Sex-Ed with Damon Dice: “I’m A Professional Athlete of Sex”

Damon Dice broke into the industry in 2014 when he was 26. Since then, he has been nominated for Fleshbot Awards' 2022 Best Total Package (Male), he’s performed in almost 1,000 scenes for major film studios, his videos on Pornhub have amassed over half a billion views, and his following on social media and his OnlyFans is over 95,000. He is an entrepreneur, an adult actor, an athlete, and a teacher to anyone willing to listen.

After high school, Damon went to East Carolina University to study Security Studies and Criminal Justice. Security Studies include counterterrorism and national security policy. “I wanted to get into the intelligence world.” Damon told me about how he grew up in Washington D.C., and always wanted to “catch the bad guys,” especially after 9/11 happened. He was 13 when it happened, he was very impressed and affected. Damon Dice is exceptionally disciplined and after a year, he realized that with the added pressure of athletics and student organizations, he had bitten off more than he could chew. He changed courses and got a degree in Hospitality Management focused on conventions and special events management. It made sense for him because when he was 12, his first job was at a high-end Italian restaurant. During college, he also worked as a chef (umm, YUM), which helped him develop that hospitality mindset.

I worked in sales for over a decade, and I learned that anyone who has worked face-to-face with clients thoroughly understands the human mind and behavior. I’ve always known that strippers would make the best therapists if they were interested in a less-profitable career. I asked Damon if he thought his job experience influenced him as an actor. Does understanding human behavior help him get into a role when performing? Yes! He also feels that being a cook and working in kitchens helped him learn to perform under pressure.

“Performing under pressure, I learned in the kitchen. Dealing with people and putting on a smile when I’m not in the best mind state is what I learned as a server.”

When was "Damon Dice" born?

After college, Damon Dice created a start-up called iBar. It was a live streaming app that made it possible to barhop remotely. You could check the live stream for different bars, restaurants, clubs, and events (there were safety features to ensure privacy and anonymity for the people at the locations) so you could choose where to go. Mind you, dear reader; this was back in 2011 when live streams weren’t really a thing yet. This innovative spirit is one of the things I appreciate the most about Damon Dice. At the time, app development was an unusual skill, and hiring people to build this for him was very expensive. Even with grants from the school and government, the expense was too much. This was when he Googled the classic “how can I make money fast?” Webcamming. And that’s how Damon Dice’s adult career got started. He asked a female friend to webcam with him since he already had all the equipment, “and the rest is history.”

 At the time, he had no interest in doing porn. But in 2015, Carter Cruise, the girl he had worked with, won Starlet of the Year for XBIZ, Spank Bank, Nightmoves, and AVN. He helped her set up her first website and a few other business matters, but his heart was broken at the time. After two years of hard work, a business partner stole everything their start-up had and disappeared, forcing Damon to re-invent himself, and Damon Dice was born.

As a woman in the adult industry, I wanted to know why Damon Dice made his birth name, Spencer Barrick, public and even used it on his social media. He explained that a few years ago, he had a life-or-death situation that opened his eyes. ‘Damon Dice’ is an alter ego, and trying to be two people at once dragged him down. But through mindfulness and meditation, he achieved singularity, allowing him to be who he is.

“When I go shoot, and I’m naked, I’m Damon Dice. But when I’m clothed, which is most of the time, I’m Spencer.”

How do you keep up with everything?

If you follow Damon Dice, you know the guy is busy. He has new professional and exclusive scenes coming out, he’s a Brand Strategist for Jardín Dispensary in Las Vegas, he started a direct-to-consumer condom company called PS Condoms, a CBD company, a Snapchat filter company, and he’s working on a cannabis lube. So, I had to ask how he keeps up with everything. He said it’s tough, but he’s used to the workload because he’s always taken up multiple things simultaneously.

“That’s why I’m in a unique position for who I am as an adult actor and in business ventures. Because my background is in business entrepreneurship, I carry that over to where I am today with my business ventures. It’s definitely a balance between shooting, business, taking care of my health, and wellness… it’s a lot, but I’m all about the madness.”

I asked Damon Dice what he meant by “unique position,” and he explained that he’s always been a go-getter. He has always looked forward to trying and doing new things. “I’ve always been a creator,” he clarified.

How important is time management?

Maybe I’m just nosey, but I wanted to better understand Damon’s time management tips and tricks. I’ve realized that all the great adult actresses and actors that achieve longevity in the industry are magicians regarding time management. They are responsible and organized and have learned to delegate to create and grow a brand. Oh! Did I forget to mention they are humans with personal life, family, friends, pets, and emotional needs that they also balance with work? We have a lot to learn from these artists who have created a name and brand outside the structure of a 9-5 job while enduring the undeniable challenges of sex work.

Do you have time management advice?

Damon Dice fine-tuned time management skills in college when he juggled a very demanding curriculum; he was in several student organizations and had practice twice daily. “I’ve trained myself to keep busy.” But being an athlete contributed the most to his discipline and ability to manage time, life balance, and expectations. But it’s a skill he’s been working on for 15 years. He has advice for people who might struggle with time management:

1. Write your schedule- be organized.
2. Don’t bite off more than you can chew.
3. Take care of your body, mind, and soul.
4. Manage distractions like social media.
5. Have fun!
