EDITORIAL FEATURES

GoAskAlex talked life, porn, and fanny packs with us...

Go Ask Alex is a busy woman these days so we were happy that she found some time to answer some questions and talk with us. She's not only a performer with tons of projects, but also an environmentalist, indigenous rights activist, and as a disabled sex worker. Jump down the rabbit hole and read more about her!

Tell us about your journey to sex work and how you ended up on the path. What do you like the most about what you do?
"I’ve always been an all or nothing person, and when I heard that I could earn a living in front of my webcam I knew that it was the perfect gig for me. It wasn’t too long before I quit my day-job and became a full time online sex worker. There are many things that I love about this work, including the people that I meet and the intimate interactions that I have. One of the things I appreciate most about my job is the flexibility. I can take off as many days as I need to. With that being said, I struggle with time management and can often end up overworking myself or forgetting about big deadlines!"

Where can we find your work-- which sites do you have material on? What niches/genres/kinks does your work fall into and what are your favorite types of content to produce? Which social media platforms do you participate in the most?
"My personal website is www.goaskalex.com. This is the best place to see my catalogue of writing, and acts as a directory for all of my porn sites. The majority of the paid work I do now is on OnlyFans (www.onlyfans.com/goaskalex), but I also love to write for different news outlets and sell my videos on various clip sites. I have experimented with many different kinks and genres, but my favourite content to produce and star in is based in genuine pleasure, consent, and diversity. "

You are a really awesome disabled sex worker and engage in a lot of advocacy on behalf of disabled sex workers. I think it is very important that marginalised bodies are represented in porn. Tell us where we can see the work of more disabled sex workers! What does the industry as a whole need to do in your opinion to highlight and uplift body diversity?
"You may be surprised to know that many sex workers are living with disabilities and limitations (both mental and physical). Almost every sex worker I know has dealt with chronic health/mental health setbacks. The fact that sex work has a ‘low barrier for entry’ means that it is more accessible for people with disabilities than many other professions. Unfortunately the idea of sex work being a ‘low barrier for entry’ career has been conflated with it being an ‘undesirable’ line of work, which couldn’t be any further from the truth.

You don’t need to look far to find a sex worker living with a disability. Unfortunately due to societal stigma, not everyone is comfortable sharing this side of themselves (this applies to everyone, not just sex workers!). Until we as a society can destigmatize mental health and disabilities, I don’t know that we can expect to see more representation. At the same time, representation is a key factor in ending the stigma, and something that we all need to prioritise. We need to see more diversity in pornography; we need to see underrepresented bodies. Unfortunately the majority of disabled bodies in pornography are used to perpetuate harmful stereotypes and fetishes. This isn’t only true for disabled bodies; we need to see diversity of gender, race, and size, without fetishizing or tokenizing the performer."

Your work defending the Fairy Creek Forest reminds me of Julia Butterfly Hill and The Legacy of Luna. Who and what inspires you in your environmental advocacy work?
"I have always had a strong connection to my ecological environment. From my earliest days stomping in puddles I was involved in environmental advocacy. During childhood, I was planting trees, releasing fish fry, and working to remove invasive species from local Canadian parks. Though my life is much busier these days, I try to find time on the weekends to clean up garbage on nearby beaches. We are undeniably living in a climate crisis, and experts agree we are almost at the point of no return. In the past year my province has seen the highest temperature recorded, and similarly harrowing snow dumps. Each year, our flooding and forest fires are more devastating. It is baffling to me that our government (and the corporations lining their pockets) are powering on with catastrophic resource extraction, even in the face of our own mass extinction."

In the news recently, we’ve been hearing about the horrors or residential schools in Canada where mass graves of indigenous children have been discovered. This is in addition to what’s been going on with Fairy Creek Forest and I’m sure other places where indigenous land is being stolen and threatened. What, in your opinion, can the average person do to help indigenous communities and to help stop these atrocities? How do we de-colonize our minds?
"In school, I wasn’t taught anything about residential schools, or the ongoing assimilation of Indigenous peoples in Canada. As an adult, I’ve become more in touch with my Indigenous ancestry and I continue to educate myself on Canada’s dark history and ongoing racism. I believe that educating ourselves is the first step in decolonizing ourselves. One of the most important things we can do is simply to listen to Indigenous people, and elevate their voices. Being a good ally isn’t about serving the self, and it’s crucial to really listen to what Indigenous communities have to say. It’s important to remove ego from the equation."

How did you pick your porn name? What were some rejected porn names, if you had any?
"Growing up I became interested in an eclectic selection of music, including psychedelic rock. The song ‘White Rabbit’ by Jefferson Airplane stuck out to me due to my own experiences in my youth. Hilariously enough, I picked “GoAskAlex” because “GoAskAlice” was already taken on the popular streaming platform I worked from. I am currently debating whether or not to choose a ‘Last name’ for myself because it comes across as more professional. I’m open to suggestions!"

What’s your favorite scene that you’ve shot recently and why?
"I recently shot my second ever boy/girl scene! It was a big moment for me, because it’s something that I’ve been working towards for many years. So far I have only shot blowjob videos, but I hope to shoot penetrative videos in the (near) future!"

What did you want to do as a career/calling earlier in your life? Why were you drawn to it?
"Before sex work, I worked in quite a few industries. The longest I stayed at one job was four years, during which I was a fundraiser in the nonprofit industry. Aside from that I’ve worked at both a costume store and a feminist sex shop, as well as working as a maid and as a clown!"

One of the things I like best about porn is looking at everyone’s ink! Tell us the stories (or some of them) of your tattoos and body mods.
"I can honestly say that most of my tattoos mean absolutely nothing at all. I decided to cover myself with beautiful illustrations because they make me feel strong. So far I’ve chosen a variety of insects, botany, and animal-life for my tattoos. I think that is because of my strong connection to my environment (any other PNW performers out there!?)"

What’s the strangest thing we’d find in your purse/ bag if you emptied it right now?
"Fun Alex fact - I don’t use a purse or a bag, but you’ll never catch me without a fanny pack (That may mean something else to our UK readers). I actually have 4-5 different identical fanny packs littered around my house because I can never find them! If I were to open one right now, you’d see my favourite orange lipstick (yes, I keep one in each fanny pack). Because I have a puppy, I am always carrying doggy-bags, a carabiner, and a bear-bell for hiking."

Do you have any pets? What types and what are their names?
"I only have one pet, but she has the energy of several! She is a one year old border collie, and her name is Ladybird. I take her to agility twice per week, and we go sheep-herding every month or so! She is extremely intelligent, so she constantly needs to do tasks to keep her mind busy. Sometimes I feel like she’s a tiny human. "

Who and what inspires your fashion choices? What are three wardrobe pieces (for work or not) that are essential for you?
"My fashion style was recently described as “Ms Frizzle, but young and hot”. I wear a lot of overalls, toques (beanies, for our American readers), and knee-socks. On the average day, you can find me rocking socks and sandals, even in the summer heat! Socks, sandals, and a fanny pack goes with everything."

Do you have anything you’d like to say to your loyal fans and potential new fans?
"Thank you so much for sticking around to learn more about me. You can find all of my links on www.goaskalex.com, where you can sign up for email updates and be the first to learn about upcoming projects."
