Being Scared Is Better With A Scream Queen
When comes to horror movies there are certain things we all want to see. A scary monster, a couple of jump scares, some blood and gore, narrow escapes, but most all if a horror movie is to work, we are going to need a Scream Queen. Just like rom-coms need quirky best friends, superheros need sidekicks, horror movies aren't the same with a scream queen.
For as long as things have gone bump in the night, there has been someone to scream about it. No doubt the scream queen has become one of the most iconic characters in all cinematic history. One could go back all the way to 1920s The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and the 1922 masterpiece Nosferatu to find the groundwork for what would become the modern day scream queen. Most people point to Fay Wray in King Kong as the first true scream queen. From then on we've had some real fantastic scream queens including Olivia Hussey, Sandra Peabody, Debbie Rochon, and one of the all-time best scream queens, Linnea Quigley. Be they running from a monster, being stalked by psychos, or trying to make it until morning each scream queen brings something different and kind of sexy to the table. In an interview with GC Magazine Debbie Rochon described what a scream queen really is:
"A true Scream Queen isn't The Perfect Woman. She's sexy, seductive, but most importantly 'attainable' to the average guy. Or so it would seem."
Truer words were never spoken.
What scares us may change, but one thing that never will is our love of the scream queen. So, the next time you gathered around a campfire or carving your Jack-o-Lantern, take a few moments to honor those who make horror movies that much better. We Salute You, Scream Queens!
