Philip Lorca-DiCorcia @ Gagosian

Philip Lorca-DiCorcia is best known for his theatrically composed photographs which capture individuals in moments of hyperrealistic, crystalline clarity, and his portraits of pole dancers which went on exhibition today at the Gagosian Gallery in London (and which are also part of the current Carnegie International in Pittsburgh) continue his exploration of light, time, place, and identity: "Each large-scale image captures a dancer mid-pose wrapped around a dancing pole. The works are shot in various locations and in each case the dancers are not performing for an audience but rather just for the artist himself, making the setting strangely empty. Suspended in the air and starkly lit, each woman
s body takes on the character of a statue."
