Alva Bernadine: Four Hundred & One Blows

Winner of the UK's Erotic Photographer of the Year award in 2002, Alva Bernadine has long offended and/or enlightened with his world class brand of surrealistic image making. Besides the other offerings on his portfolio site (which includes galleries with titles like "Succubus" and "Gratuitious Sex & Violence—My Favourites"), Bernadine's recent project "Four Hundred & One Blows" applies technology towards an appreciation of the physics and subtleties of BDSM: using shutter speeds of several thousandths of a second, he's perfected capturing the heretofore-unseen cellulitic ripple of an ass getting spanked. (Think Harold Edgerton with a wooden sppon and bare bottom instead of a bullet and an apple.) The effect is otherworldly, as if the ass were treading the ephemeral boundaries of an alternate dimension ... though less poetically it also reminds us of that classic dirty-old-man saying "It must be jelly, 'cause jam don't shake like that!"A.
