When we found out that tasty little shibari morsel (and natural redhead) The English Tart was going to be at the upcoming Chicago Shibaricon 2006, we had to find out just what makes this extremely in-demand model return to the ropes again and again. You're an extremely accomplished shibari model—your credits range from bondage.com, House of Gord and NawaShibari all the way to Hustler! How did you get into shibari?

As for the Shibari, that I blame entirely on MorTis. I have always admired Shibari and many other forms of ropework and was always in awe of those tied up and suspended. MorTis and I got to know each other through bondage.com and we talked about all forms of BDSM, and I also talked about wanting to try being tied up and suspended; plus, I have such a fear of heights I knew it would be a rush for me. So he flew out to Seattle back in February 2004 specifically to see me and try and fufill my wish. And the rest, as they say, is history. I fell in love with the feeling of not only the rope but the space it created for me—I truly got to experience subspace. It opened the door to further exploration and working and playing with some of the best rope artists. And it was also the beginning of my experience with Shibaricon.

What kind of girl are you, English Tart?

Well apart from the usual (checks anatomy and physiology book) ... within the BDSM world I would label myself as a Switch, an evil yet sensual Top and a loving and obedient submissive. Other than that on the outside world I'm a very well experienced and well travelled registered nurse. I'm an open minded and non-judgemental person—after seeing the things I have seen over my 15 years in the nursing field you wouldn't be judgemental, either!

What will you be doing at Shibaricon?

I'm an actual event sponsor this year. I just wanted to help the event in anyway way I could, it is such an amazing community that has been built up since Shibaricon was put together by MorTis back in 2004. This is my way of giving something back. This is my third year at Shibaricon; I was there at the begininng. Other than hanging around (!) I'm hoping to demo again this year with Lochai and The Hungry Tiger. Plus I always do my share on the medical team—any excuse to wear my fetish nurse outfits!

Are you excited about anything else going on there?

There are so many people I know and have worked with before. It's just great to get together at this time and share in something that we all love. I remember the end of the first year Lochai spoke and described his experience of Shibaricon as a coming home. To me being there is being able to be my true self, Claire, the person, the nurse, The English Tart, and the person who I am in the lifestyle.

It is also a gallery event for The Traveling Erotic Art Show, which has been working its way across the country, with fine photography skills from the likes of Lochai, James Mogul and Steve Diet Goedde, to name just a few.

What does it feel like to be all tied up like that?

It depends on the type of rope and also the rope Top, and also the position, and the tie. It can be anything from hypnotic and relaxing enough where I fall asleep to a full on S/M scene with the likes of MorTis or Jim Duvall. I find mostly I relax. I'm such a busy girl, it's like been given permission to find myself and meditate. Although it's different when I am modeling; I have to be more aware as there's a time limit and I'm not able to fully let go.

Have you ever had an orgasm while in shibari?

Can't say I have—I don't find shibari sexual. It turns me on but not to a point that I would orgasm. It's different if I'm playing in a scene with a special someone. Then there's more intimacy.

What's coming up for you?

Currently, my website is down undergoing redesign, so I'm waiting on that to be up, while trying to get back to 100% fitness—ah, the joys of being a nurse ... back injuries! All being well, I will be at FetishCon in Tampa in August as an Attending Model. I'm a spontanteous kind of girl so I take each day as it comes and see what ropes are before me!
