Musical Mia!
Porn star/sex activist Mia Li just taught her very first class at the online O.school and it was called “Don’t Fake it Till You Make It” , a livestreamed course on improving communication in the bedroom. Here are some tunes that she adores and her thoughts behind them.
Can I just say that I think that sharing your music taste is so vulnerable and intimate. Here you go. Music has always been something that carried me. Songs have a quality of bringing me back in time or to specific periods in my life listening to music to help get through the ups and downs. Concurrently with entering into adult film, I picked up the ukulele and have written songs. This has given me a pretty personal connection to the music I play and listen to.
I absolutely hate choosing favorites because it is an exceedingly difficult and complicated task for me, but here are my top 5 songs. They’re a mix of songs that I love to sing out loud in my car, lose myself in, make me feel like a bad ass, and live by.
"Love You Madly" by Cake: This is one of my favorite songs to play and sing on the ukulele. When I play it, I get a little moody with it as I sing because the uke sound is so bright in contrast. In the original the trumpet always gets me. It might be because I grew up in the 90’s, but I do enjoy Cake.
"No. 1 Party Anthem" by Arctic Monkeys: This is a song that I’ve been listening to lately on repeat on long drives to and from LA. It really touches the introvert/extrovert in me and the inner awkward I carry. It’s a really smooth sounding song.
"Living Tree" by Wild Child: Wild Child is this awesome folk jazz pop band from Austin, Texas. This song live blows me away every time. They are my favorite band because they mix really bright upbeat sound with some heavy lyrics and they are amazing live. This band has influenced my love of my music so much and has got me through some of the hardest times in my life.
"Stand Tall" by Childish Gambino: Can I just say that I have a giant crush on Donald Glover? When I feel like garbage and defeated because the world is full of hurt and people who perpetuate that hurt and violence I turn to this song.
"Prelude to War" (on accordion) by Bear McCreary: My favorite show is "Battlestar Galactica" and my favorite composer is Bear McCreary. Listen to this song here. It’s seriously impressive how Bear performs all the parts to this complex song that hinges one of the tensest moments in "Battlestar Galactica". If you haven’t seen someone tear it up on the accordion, watch Bear McCreary’s performance. And if you haven’t seen "Battlestar Galactica", do yourself a favor and watch it.
