When I read about Pornhub's new Sexual Wellness Center, I got so excited I ripped my headphones off and almost tipped over my chair. I've been waiting for something like this for forever - as you readers may know, I'm very passionate about bridging the gap between porn and sex education - and HERE IT IS. Of course, several porn companies, kink.com among them, already have dedicated areas for sex ed, but we've yet to see it from a major tube site. (And as we know, most people - particularly most young people) are getting their porn on tube sites.
Pornhub has long slayed at marketing and fun branding ideas, like their sex workout program and hilarious holiday takeovers, and they obviously have a dedicated team parsing data - just check out the Pornhub Insights blog. But this is something beyond innovative. It shows a certain kind of self-awareness and social accountability that a lot of folks don't consider the adult industry capable of.
In the wake of so many recent attacks on porn, such as Prop 60 and Fight the New Drug, I've spent a lot of time commenting on the unrealistic idea of being able to wipe out the entire adult industry, and the logical fallacy it portrays. It's simple: When it comes to sex education, porn is not the problem. Porn is simply a kind of media that can be inspirational or sexy, and it is not porn's fault that real, detailed sex education isn't taught to provide the context we need to be informed consumers. The lack of context is the problem - so what do we do about it?
Well, PornHub knows. Those of us who provide the entertainment can make a massive impact by providing an accompanying education. After all, if the people are coming to us to make them come, we're the most logical answer. Pornhub is perhaps the most popular porn site in the world, so this new center - found right on their site - is an incredible, conscientious solution. The site is sparsely populated so far, but it's directed by Dr. Laurie Bentito, a psychotherapist specializing in sex, and promises to source from a variety of sexperts, doctors, therapists, and beyond to help people bring the joy of sex and porn into their own lives and relationships. I love this!
You can sign up for a newsletter, which will send you new articles directly, and I have naturally added myself to the list. I sincerely hope this kind of endeavor is a smashing success - and that the adult industry as a whole follows suit.
