Instagram broke their silence about why they have such dated policies regarding people posting nude pictures on their site, and of course they're passing the buck. Last week, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom spoke at a media event in London and, according to Mic (link below), said that Apple's App Store is the one who doesn't allow apps with explicit content.
According to Systrom, if Instagram runs up against these rules in any way — like allowing the posting of nipples — the app runs the risk of being banned from the store.
As it stands, the app store only allows explicit nudity if the app is rated 17+; Instagram is currently rated 12+. Systrom argued that if the app were to increase its age bracket, it would end up keeping out many younger users who only want to see nonexplicit content.
Despite the censorship, the company is "committed to artistic freedom," Systrom said, according to Business Insider. He did admit, however, that "in order to scale effectively, there are [some] tough calls" — banning the nipple included.
There's a huge problem with his reasoning on this one, and if you said it's the fact that Twitter's age rating in the App Store is 4+, you win the internet. Here's a screenshot from the App Store to back this up...
Yeah, I know, I have to update one of my Apps, but let's stay on topic. Twitter is jam packed with nudity, porn, and all manner of potentially offensive content that, according to this rating, can be enjoyed by anyone over the age of four. So yeah, Kevin Systrom, you're not only full of shit, you're also likely to be a cybernetic organism and I say this based solely on the fact that your name uses a "y" as a vowel, which is the kind of thing that, as we all know, only happens in shitty sci-fi movies. If you don't want female nipples on your app, just say so. Don't try blaming Apple.
