Belle Knox Talks about the Mainstreaming of Adult Stars and Her Place in the Industry

PORNSTARS

Belle Knox’s recent five-part docu-series, Becoming Belle Knox, has certainly re-amped her career that seemed as though it was slowly withering on the adult entertainment vine. While I’m sure the Duke University student-turned porn star is more than busy with her studies, considering the fall semester is in full swing, she found time between classes to do an interview with The Daily Beast (link below) to talk about the mainstreaming of adult stars and the business in general.

While many point to Kim Kardashian as the most recent example of a porn star finding success in the mainstream, Belle pontificates about people “becoming more tolerant and more open to sexuality and new ideas,” and how she’s become more prevalent “at a time when people are starting to listen.” Unless a porn girl is dating Charlie Sheen, she rarely gets mainstream attention. Thanks to Kim K. and Belle’s Shavian-introduction to porn, there’s a growing trend that inherently melds porn to the mainstream.

But there are those that refuse to listen to Belle, especially fellow porn performer Bonnie Rotten, who took time from her excessive squirting and gaping her rectum to tweet: “Why put a girl who knows nothing about the industry and is barely in the industry as the voice for our industry. Laughable! laugh it off!”

All due respect to Bonnie, who is currently my third favorite porn star behind Allie Haze and Belle Knox, but it doesn’t appear that anyone is making Belle the voice of the industry. If anything, Belle is just adding another voice to the already jumbled equation, which is more the work of mainstream media than it is Belle.

As Aurora Snow insightfully comments in The Daily Beast article, “Sure, Knox hasn’t put in as many hours as the veterans who criticize her, but as an industry spokesperson she isn’t exactly bad for porn’s image. She’s well spoken, educated, and sober.”

Continue with the piling on of Belle, Dana DeArmond commented via Twitter, “Ooh this Belle Knox thing got everybody in a tizzy. Don’t you wish you thought of pretending to go to college to get press too?”

As Belle noted, “I hope that people will see the multi-faceted nature of women who are in sex work, especially porn. I hope that I've shattered some of the stereotypes that have been so ingrained in our culture about porn stars: that we're dirty, that we're uneducated, that we're bimbos. I really hope that my story shows people that we're just like you and we're smart. We treat this as a business and we're sick of being slut-shamed and we're sick of being constantly stigmatized and marginalized.”

Spoken like a first year Duke University student with a bright future ahead of her, with or without porn.
