Netflix Picks: On The Art Of Filming Fucking

Movie sex looks like a lot of fun, but know this: it ain't easy being skeezy. Whether you're making porn or simply filming a "tasteful" erotic encounter, it takes vision, patience, and a little twinkle of madness to transmit lust from the lies of an actor to the eye of the audience. For today's double feature, we're looking at two very different approaches to this process in the hopes that it will increase your respect (or maybe your disgust) for the filming of fucking.

1. Sex Is Comedy: First up is "Sex Is Comedy," a movie we've looked at a few times before--including once as part of Joe Swanberg's top ten movie sex scenes of all time. This is Catherine Breillat's semiautobiographical piece about the stress and strangeness that goes into the filming of sex, and it's primarily based on her experiences of filming "Fat Girl." The two actors destined to do it on camera (played by Grégoire Colin and the lovely Roxane Mesquida) can't stand each other and the director has a sexual relationship with the actor, but she's hell-bent on getting her two puppets to connect intimately, at least for as long as the cameras roll. Nudity-wise, there's not much to see until the end of the film, but damn it gets good at the end. Roxane Mesquida is drop dead sexy on the regular, but this may be out favorite role of hers. You can see her do her thang at 13:00, 1:17:00, 1:18:00, and 1:23:00.

2. Inserts: Now for something new and different! "Inserts" takes place around in Hollywood around the beginning of the Talkie Era (the 1930s) and stars Richard Dreyfuss as a young director who's fallen out of favor with the major Hollywood studios because of his unwillingness to "lower his standards" or give up his experimental style. He's also an alcoholic and somewhat of a shut-in, and he works out of his decaying mansion, the only house left on a street that's being cleared out in place of a freeway. One day, he hires a washed-up heroin junkie star of silent-films (Veronica Cartwright) and tries his hand at pornography; naturally, things go horribly, but it's great fun to watch other showbiz types get sucked in as everyone descends into a whirlpool of substance abuse and raunchy sex. The movie is set-up like a play, with all the action taking place in one room and progressing in real time, but there's never a dull moment, and when things seem especially dark (such as in the rough sex scene above) there's often macabre humor that brings it back to base. Look for Veronica Cartwright and Jessica Harper getting down in the dirty '30s at 1:00, 16:00, 31:00, 38:00, 1:15:00, and 1:18:00.
