I met him for cocktails on the Lower East Side. I hadn't seen him in years, and I was surprised to see how much he'd changed. He looked more muscular, more defined, more imposing than he did back in school.

I marveled at the change while he ordered our drinks, but I also recognized the familiar mannerisms. He spoke with the same deadpan humor, he still smiled by turning up just one corner of his mouth. He was fresh from work, so he was wearing a crisp white shirt, but he still had his irreverent art-school edge. Then he pushed up his sleeves up to expose his forearms and while he gestured with his hands, I noticed the heavy silver rings. Thick silver bands around his thumb and forefinger of his left hand. An elaborate band around the middle finger of his right. I remembered those rings.

The first time I noticed those rings was during a party back in college. The more drunk I got, the more they had a magpie effect on my disoriented brain - it triggered my fixation on men's hands. We were later at my place, his ringed hand over my face, two fingers pressing into my mouth, while he jerked down my underwear with the other.

I told myself that we were just catching up after all of these years, that I shouldn't sleep with him again because it would just lead to the same inevitable disaster it did then. But as I drank, I kept my eyes on his hands. And when he placed his hand on the small of my back, I knew I'd end up at his place. Two fingers pressed into my mouth, again.
