When Mubarak's regime fell, religious groups began exercising greater cultural control in Egypt, and Western clothing is being slowly replaced with more "modest attire." But blogger and media arts student Aliaa Magda Elmahdy isn't about to have anybody dictate what she does with her body, and she's saying so with nude photos.
Elmahdy isn't just fighting for bodily rights, she's also working to preserve artistic rights. Nude models have allegedly been banned in Egypt, so art students like Elmahdy can't do figure drawing. She notes, "the yellow rectangles on my eyes, mouth and sex organ resemble the censoring of our knowledge, expression and sexuality," and she writes on her Facebook page that she is "echoing screams against a society of violence, racism, sexism, sexual harassment and hypocrisy."
Incidentally, today is her birthday. Happy twentieth birthday, Aliaa! You're a radical lady.
