This movie just changed everything we thought we knew about mainstream French cinema. We expected some softcore groping here and there, but we ended up getting spanking, fingering, banging, blowjobs, and cunnilingus—all completely real. This makes Cinemax look like a high school sex-ed class.
For the curious, "Q" is about people looking for love and happiness who are all touched (sometimes literally) by the redheaded nymphomaniac Cecile (Deborah Revy), the living embodiment of lust. The director said he wanted to break taboos and deliver a unique look at sexuality, but French critics were not having it—they tore this movie up. It's been called softcore and pretentious, compared to TV-movies and amateur porn, and one critic wondered how the director ever thought that this could be jarring when we live in a world steeped in internet pornography. As one critic put it, this movie operates "as if the appearance of a turgid cock on the screen still had strength of transgression." Oh snap!
Let the haters hate. Maybe unsimulated sex is old news in France, but in America, this movie could be groundbreaking. Or not. Whatever! We could watch this a thousand times (and the clip above only contains about half of the naughtiness in "Q").
