The Encyclopedia Of Smut: I Is For Interracial Porn

Interracial porn is a sensitive subject, but we have to talk about it because it's important and we love it. Well, do we really love it? Would we be happier if there weren't a separate section of the porn world that was all about big black cocks penetrating small white holes? And yes, when people talk about interracial porn as a genre, they usually mean black males partnered with white women. What's the deal with that? God, it's only been one paragraph and we've already tied ourselves in a knot.

The pretentious academic side of us wants to talk about race fetishism and Orientalism and all that stuff, and even though such topics are definitely worth delving into, we honestly don't have the knowledge for that. History

It's widely-agreed that the Mitchell Brothers' 1972 classic, "Behind the Green Door," is the first feature-length hardcore film to include a major interracial sex scene. We desperately wish we had a clip from it--and, by the way, the scene above has nothing to do with anything--but we'll describe it for you. Marilyn Chambers is kidnapped (by the Mitchell Brothers) and placed on a stage in front of an audience wearing lavish masks. She is then fondled by a bunch of women wearing strange robes, and then Johnny Keyes--just so we're clear, he's a black man--comes out and has sex with her while jazz plays in the background. After that, Gloria has sex with various other men, the audience gets aroused and they start screwing each other, semen flies through the air while psychedelic lights go off, etc., etc., it's a classic.

Stereotypes

In her book, "Porn Studies," Linda Williams describes how the interracial scene in "Behind the Green Door" echoes themes explored in films within the blaxploitation/sexploitation genres, specifically "Mandingo." She writes:

…the film resembles 'Mandingo' in its depiction of the black man's desire tinged with fear, and in its theatrical performance of an interracial sex act as a form of commodified visual pleasure. In both cases, this pleasure consciously plays on racial and sexual stereotypes--of the hypersexed black man and the sexually voracious white woman.

Williams also points out that Chambers began her career as a model/actress by being the happy mother on the side of Ivory Soap boxes; that little facet only heightens the already apparent stereotypical dynamic between the "pure" white woman and her black lover.

We could sit here all day and list the various stereotypes that come with interracial porn, but you probably already know them by heart. You probably took one look at the picture we posted at the top of this page and knew that we were deliberately drawing on the big black dick myth--after all, how could we not? The majority of interracial porn (including, but not limited to, cuckold porn) relies heavily on stereotype. How the Adult Industry Views Interracial Porn

Naturally, everyone gets their own opinion, but there are a few major channels of thought that we've noticed during our time as professional perverts. In general, there used to be a greater discomfort with interracial porn in the adult industry than there is now; anecdotal reports of casual racism seem to be everywhere, and they involve performers, directors, producers, and distributors. For example, not far back in the '90s, Sean Michaels had a scene with Ashlyn Gere that was removed from final film and reshot with a white male performer because the distributors refused to move a mainstream porno that featured interracial sex.

To this day, some female pornstars treat interracial sex the same way they treat anal: it's something that you save for much later, something that's used to entice viewers when the box cover proudly announces so-and-so's first time with a black guy. For reasons that extend far beyond the dynamics present in porn, black/white sex is often seen as "more hardcore" than other sex acts, even those that involve other races.

A few years ago, Lexington Steele sat down with B.E.T. to talk about racial stereotypes in the porn industry, and he actually presented them in a somewhat positive light. He described the discussion to XFanz soon after:

"A very long time ago, I understood the use of stereotypes as it relates to adult video and African American participants. By taking advantage of a stereotype, I've been able to build my popularity and use it to my advantage," Steele said. "Knowing that there's a position for African American males historically, one can be a victim of that stereotype or repossess it and then redistribute it in one's own image. By knowing that I fit into that stereotype, I was able to remanufacture it."
