Netflix Picks: Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number (Except In Relation To Sex)

TV/MOVIES

We're not saying that the young are always going to be inexperienced at lovemaking, or that older lovers will always guide you through their techniques, but the tropes of May-December romances do have some truth to them. Take these following films, for example: even though they don't all focus on age, you can see how sexual comfort, personal maturity, and sanity all come into play.

1. Green Chair: This movie deals with Kim Mun-hee, a lonely thirty-something housewife who falls for nineteen-year old Seo-hyun and begins an affair with him. Unfortunately, since the age of consent in Korea is twenty (at least it is according to this film, we have trouble finding a straight answer elsewhere), Mun-hee gets involved in a serious public scandal and spends a few days in prison. When she gets out, Seo-hyun is there waiting for her, and they retreat to a hotel. Fortunately, just as soon as you, the viewer, start to question your enjoyment of this movie, Kim starts to question her relationship with Seo-hyun. It's a curious film that raises some interesting questions about the age of consent, so it's definitely worth a look.

2. The Brothel: A woman attempts to flee her recent tragedies and personal demons by driving out to the middle of Arizona and turning a decrepit old house into a cute little hotel. However, the house she's working on used to be a brothel, and the ghosts of the prostitutes are still living there. Not only do we get to see these 19th century babes let loose, but even our heroine shows some skin!

3. Leap Year: Laura spends most of her time in her tiny Mexico City apartment, spying on neighbors and dreaming up romantic relationships for them, then at night she finds strange men and invites them back to her room for unfulfilling sex. This continues until she meets Arturo, a slightly older man with a taste for sadomasochism. This movie isn't exactly the good kind of erotic, but its rawness mixes with a strange claustrophobia that is totally captivating.

4. Wild Orchid: Sure, Mickey Rourke might be a little crazy these days (everybody automatically thinks of him in "Iron Man 2" and that's not fair because nobody wants to be remembered as a psychotic Russian physicist with electric whips on his arms), but let's not forget that he is crazy suave. He is a calm beast in "Wild Orchid," helping people get in touch with their passions because he is unable to express his. Of course, he eventually gets to express himself during a wild night with Carre Otis; the scene is so hot, we had to include it at the top of this page.
