“Hairy in America: The Lesbians” Is Not Redundant At All

We live in interesting times, and I don't think that's a curse. How crazy is it that underarm and pubic hair are supposed to have the power to turn us on or off, depending on the decade?

Here are some women with hair: You decide if they are lesbians.

Four couples frolic on bearskin rugs and on rustic knolls in Third World Media's "Hairy in America: Lesbian Edition." Among their number is Tara Lynn Foxx, whom we quite often see taking the dick from gentlemen. Is she a lesbian simply because today she is nose deep in the hirsute snatch of Sammy Grand?

I tell you: this movie poses more questions than it answers.

I remember talking with old-tymey pornographers about the gradual shift from pubes to hairless in the late 1980s.

"It looked crazy to me," said Roy Karch, credited with shooting some of the first porn on video. "Clinical."

Then, after a generation of bald vulvae, hair crept back as an almost political statement, and now it's a fetish.

"I remember in the early 90's, even we lesbians working at Castle Megastore looked at Janine Lindemulder as the Woman of the Future," a former employee of that adult chain store told me, "and by 1995 or so we'd see women with pubes as people who were 'letting it go.' Not all lesbians made politics out of hair."

There are certainly women in this movie who fit the stereotype of "hairy lesbian," but it is fascinating how what we think of as a hard and fast stereotype can change.

(My favorite scene in this movie is between Clarissa and a woman named Raven Rocket; I think Rocket has just the right amount of everything.)
