Wax, Whacks On: “50 Shades Of Red”

Don't dismiss this fine bit of revenge bondage simply because it has "50 Shades" in the title. Instead, revel in a porn rarity: People saying real stuff!

Don't get us wrong—we are aware that people say real stuff in porn all the time. But this one-sided duel between Julie Simone (in an occasional submissive role) and Rebecca Reynolds, as the jealous wife who chloroforms the temptress (Simone) who teased her husband, features dialogue that cuts just a little deeper.

Reynolds and Simone are the "Red"s of the title, but Simone's ass gets its own reddening forthwith.

Reynolds accuses Simone of "waving [your] ass in the camera" as Reynolds' husband filmed a porn movie that Simone was directing.

"You think you're so much better?" Reynolds says, pulling Simone's hair.

"It's just work," Simone says. Then: "Don't pull my hair - it hurts."

"It's not supposed to feel good."

In an incisive behind the scenes interview, Simone says she prefers domming to subbing "about a billion percent," because "when I'm directing, I prefer someone else to feel uncomfortable."

But in this movie, as with Simone's collaboration with Joe Gallant last year, there's a rawness to the dialogue, and the feelings expressed therein, that make sense.

"Do you worry that submissive roles will harm your street cred as a domme?" Simone is asked, and indeed one of the charges Reynolds lobs at her thrall in the movie is "Phoney."

Reynolds toys with a flogger.

"You better watch out," she says. "I'm an amateur. I could hit you in the face by accident, or take out an eye."

Later, Reynolds sticks her feet in Simone's face.

"Ooh. That must be humiliating for someone like you, Julie."

Reynolds tops it all off by pouring red candlewax in unmentionable places, then spanking Simone so hard that her skin almost catches up with the wax. Simone tells me that she had to release the movie herself because certain distributors would not carry "50 Shades of Red" due to the violent content.

But it's really not that violent. Instead, "50 Shades of Red" features some emotional aggression that the candle wax only tempers.
