They say that the most exclusive club in the United States in the U.S. Congress. Well, that clubhouse just got better, for today we learned that every member of Congress gets a free monthly package of pornography delivered to them, courtesy of Hustler publisher Larry Flynt.
We learned of this congressional giveaway from National Journal (link below), which writes "Since 1983, Larry Flynt has sent the monthly magazine he founded, Hustler, to each and every member of Congress."
The dirty magazine is sent as many before it have been mailed, in a plain manila envelope, which may explain why it gets past the hairy palms of interns and staffers in Washington, D.C. Certainly, if these workers knew what they were distributing to their powerful bosses, they would take it into the congressional bathroom for their own arousal.
As early as 1984 there were 264 complaints, and the U.S. Postal Service asked the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to block the mailings.
However, the Court upheld Flynt's First Amendment right to offend, declaring: "Receiving Hustler once each month would not unduly burden a Member of Congress. Members are not forced to read the magazine or other of the mail they receive in volume. We cannot imagine that Congressional offices all lack wastebaskets."
In 2011, Flynt stated his purpose for the free subscriptions. "Moses freed the Jews, Lincoln freed the slaves, and I just wanted to free all the neurotics."
Let my people come.
