Celebrating it's nineteenth anniversary this May is National Masturbation Month.
Started by sex positive retailer Good Vibrations in 1995 in honor of former Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders, the celebration is intended to protest the social stigma surrounding masturbation. It's grown from a single day to an entire month of celebrating that most sacred of solo acts.
In 2001, the Toronto-based co-operative sex shop Come As You Are threw their hat in the ring as well, with founder Cory Silverburg stating "The message we want to spread is that masturbation promotes health and happiness- that's what National Masturbation Day and the masturbate-athon are all about."
It's definitely promoting happiness. I mean, look how happy all of these ladies are. Shit, look at how happy you are!
Masturbation, bringing people together by keeping them apart!
