Sex Study Reveals Women Have Sex

EDITORIAL FEATURES

The results of the first major study on women who have a lot of sex (where was my phone call?) have been published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, revealing a condition they are calling hypersexuality.

In the past, only men have been studied for hypersexuality. Their theory was that women would be more likely to manifest their desires passively. Unsurprisingly, the survey revealed that wasn't the case. Out of 988 women who answered the 19 question survey, 3% fit the characteristics of hypersexuality and had high rates of masturbation, pornography use and promiscuity. Sounds like a regular Tuesday night to me.

Hypersexual behaviour in women was the same as in men, but the women were more likely to admit to being bisexual. The results should be taken in context though because the test group is small, based only in one age group (18-23), only from one country and limited to an online questionnaire.

Most people already know this condition by the name nymphomania, which only applies to women. The male equivalent is the barely used 'satyriasis', presumably because there are so many blokes with a permanent case of the horn that it's not unusual.

In Greek mythology, the nymph was a female character who could be sexually promiscuous to the point of aggression; always feminine, often seductive and sometimes mischievous.

Sexologists have been describing cases of hypersexuality since the late 1800s and Victorian doctors would prescribe eating plain food, no reading of novels, cold baths, cauterisation and clitoridectomies (yes, it's what it sounds like). Others handled it by relieving the patient of her 'hysteria' using a vibrator or their hand, though many never seemed to be permanently 'cured'.

Seems like cases of 'sex addiction' are all over Hollywood too these days. Whether this has been established as a real thing or not, it's certainly a handy way of getting your significant other to forgive you for fucking someone else.

As someone who reclaims the word 'slut' for her own positive purposes, I say it's better to embrace sex. It's not something to be ashamed of; it's human, and awesome. Now, everyone round to mine for the gangbang!
