Naked People Return to Times Square for a Good Cause

EDITORIAL FEATURES

There once was a time when Times Square in New York was a filthy den of sin and sex. Sadly, those days are in the past, only they seemed to revive, if only for a moment, the other day when a troupe of nudists invaded the Deuce.

The Gothamist (link below) has the story, and the pictures, the best of which are collected below in a gallery. Turns out the event was permitted and the police and authorities had no problem with the fully naked, though body-painted, people out to celebrate New York Bodypainting Day. Hip, hip hooray, and nice hips on some of those canvases.

Artist Andy Golub is the inspiration behind the event, and told local TV station WPIX, "We’re not using nudity as a form of exploitation. It’s all about body acceptance, accepting each other as we are." That's why there were an array of all ages and body types on display. The photographer for Gothamist noteed:

Was a funny contrast to see people's reactions around Columbus Circle and Central Park vs. Times Square. We all walked past picnicking families at the park and the reaction for the most part was "Oh, art!"/cool.

Once we got to Times Square, people started ogling and reacting more. One girl covered her sister's eyes. Overheard lots of "ew!"s, etc... Reactions certainly weren't all negative, but there was definitely more shock in the air around Times Square.
