Freediving is a style of underwater diving where instead of using something to help you breath, you simply hold your breath the whole time. This extreme sport sounds kind of crazy, one reason people may attempt it is when diving deep the diver experiences narcosis, which can lead to feelings of euphoria and hallucinations. In the short film Narcose the vision of world champion free diver Guillaume Néry are brought to life.
I’ll admit I caught myself a couple of time holding my breath while watching this video. The images, which are descriptions of hallucinations Néry, range from downright scary to incredibly beautiful. The beams of light and the animated monsters with glowing yellow eyes are a little unsettling, but hang on because things become a little more beautiful. Around the 7:30 mark an underwater takes place; which turns into an underwater orgy of sorts. While no one is having sex, there are many topless beautiful women swimming around. Then the last image Néry sees is a beautiful and completely nude pregnant woman. To be honest, while the image is sexy, I found also very peaceful. I’m sure you could draw hundreds of metaphors from these visions, but it doesn’t matter to me what they mean. I simply enjoy looking at beautiful women nude underwater. You can judge for yourself, the link to the Vimeo video is below.
As a kid I can remember holding my breath underwater for as long as I could. It never lasted that long and I never had any kind of visions. I’m pretty certain that freediving is not in my future, but thanks to this film I can see what it’s really like.
