Twenty Questions with Alt Newbie Minnie Scarlet

1) What kind of girl were you back in high school? Who did you hang out with/date?

I played so many different roles in high school, to be honest, it’s kind of hard to explain. I was a drama nerd while being somewhat part of the druggie group at school. I hung out with punks but still maintained a spot on my school’s competitive mock trial team, etc.! Ha. Three out of the four years I went to a public arts high school and it never really had cliques or social rules that you would find in a stereotypical high school movie. As for dating in high school, I never dated people who went to my school. I liked to keep my love life separate from my school life.

2) Were you a porn fan before you got into the industry? Who were your favorite porn stars/favorite porn movies?

From a young age, I remember being pretty enamored with the idea of women taking whatever was considered weak about them - sexuality in this case - and using it to benefit themselves. So I’ve been a fan of types of porn that contained what I believed to be examples of women taking control of their own bodies, careers, or even just aesthetics of the scene they’re in. Knowing this existed allowed me to intake porn without also internalizing a lot of the problematic stuff about it. Sasha Grey is a (cliche) favorite of mine whose career has been pivotal in changing society’s idea of what a porn star is, while still being a great porn performer. That was the beginning of my views of porn and feminist politics. They’ve evolved greatly since and I would be nowhere without the basics that first introduced me.

3) How did you come up with your nom de porn?

Ha ha… Funny you should ask… So rewind to when I was about 18 years old. I was living in the Bay Area, California with eight tarantulas and one snake I called my pets. I was just beginning in the industry and had to think of a cute name for the “alt” softcore porn site I was applying for -- the first “porn” site I ever applied for! It was pretty tame stuff, but still. I wanted my alias to be Buttercup, like the Powerpuff Girl, and like my favorite tarantula that I had already named after the cartoon character. (I was more focused on having an alias for this one site in particular, not necessarily a stage name for my entertainment career.) Apparently Buttercup wasn’t personable enough and I was prompted to choose a different, more realistic name. There were girls on the site with names like “Horse” but yeah, sure, I was down to change it. (Sooo glad I did.) I had another tarantula who was my Buttercup’s “mini-me” who I had named Minnie for short. I decided that was the best 2nd choice I had… the other tarantulas having names like Satan and Azul. Looking back now, Minnie was a great choice that I’m happy with. Scarlet, my second name, was another one of my pets. She was a scarlet birdeater tarantula -- beautiful, regal, and terrifying. The female of the species is also known for preying on the male after mating.

4) What/who do you want to do on-camera that you haven’t done yet?

Before going into the industry, threesomes were something I was super curious about. People say that porn is nothing like real life and while I have to agree... I couldn’t believe that “real life” didn’t consist of really awesome group sex every now and then the way some bummer realists sometimes imply it doesn’t. Eventually I got some really awesome “real life” experiences. Unfortunately at this point in my life, (surprise, surprise!) I still haven’t had a threesome on camera.

5) Who are your favorite performers to work with so far?

All the time, hands-down, Alaina Fox! She’s my #1 bff. Favorite to hang with, to tell secrets to, whatever. So that includes working with too. I always appreciate performers who are professional, genuine, respectful of boundaries, and try to make it fun/comfortable.

6) You seem to really love your fans and respond to them a lot on Twitter. How has having this fan base changed your life?

Well, it’s given me a job, first and foremost. I try to never take that for granted. A lot of my successes were made possible because of social media and my followers. I love social media! It’s an accessible medium to get yourself or any information out there. I’ve met a bunch of my friends and really cool people that I probably wouldn’t have otherwise because of Twitter. I love how easy it is for people to talk to me and it’s a convenient way for me to connect back. It takes five seconds and 99% of the time, I’ll read it. Thanks, internet! There are scary downsides to having a lot of information out there though. It puts this weird “people are watching” mentality in my head constantly where I’m always thinking about my safety and safety of people around me.

7) What’s your favorite position to get fucked in and why does it get you off?

I’m super romantic and cheesy so I like missionary so I can see my partner’s face. I love being held and cared for. It’s just part of who I am. I like being pampered and really love both attention in and out of bed. If we’re talking just about no-feelings-who-gives-a-fuck kind of fucking, then doggy is awesome if I’m being topped. I avoid eye contact if I’m submitting a lot. If I’m topping, I like riding so I can grab my partner’s face/throat/mouth/etc.. Hee hee.

8) Have you ever joined a fan club other than Courtney Trouble’s? 

No!! I think she might be my FIRST! Eeeeee!

9) What fetishes do you have that you think that your fans would be surprised by?
I’m probably pretty beyond shocking my fans at this point. Even when I’m not being super raunchy and sexy, my weirdness never leaves. They all know to expect weird shit…

10) What are the best things about being a porn star?

Porn star! Ah! I’m not sure if I’ll ever really feel comfortable calling myself one but being part of a somewhat ostracized community no one knows much about is pretty funny sometimes. People wonder so much about the industry, and then there are all these weird rumors that have been made up. One cool thing is there is always some weird link between some celebrities and porn girls. It’s given me weird opportunities that I’m not sure would have been open to me otherwise, lol. It doesn’t happen to all porn girls and it sure as hell isn’t an all access pass or easy road, but every now and then someone who just super loves porn wants to do porn a favor back I guess. That’s the more shallow “perk”. I do value being in a place that is considered unconventional though. I meet so many different performers with really crazy stories or see sides of people (fans) I might not otherwise if I was a different kind of entertainer. I also get to educate people by challenging their “norms” - if you will - when it comes to porn and how to treat performers.

11) How is Courtney Trouble to work for as a director?
Honestly, she was one of the best people I’ve worked with in the adult industry! Directing is such a male dominated field that having someone outside of that stereotype was great. Let alone someone familiar with queer porn and certain politics that aligned with my views as well. I never have to worry about fetishizing my ethnicity or age with Courtney. I appreciate that so much and feel like THAT’s what a safe work environment is. Plus Courtney is actually also a performer so you know that you’re not going to get an insensitive jerk who has no idea what it’s like to be in your position, if that makes sense.

12) So far, you are only credited with working for Courtney Trouble. Any chance you will work for someone else?

Right now I’m pretty lucky in the way that my involvement in the porn industry is reduced down to companies/people who I really have a desire to work with and putting in work for my own site, MinnieScarlet.com. I like the idea that so few people own my content, the majority and best (in my opinion) belonging to my site and not someone else. I didn’t have that option to really pick and choose when I first entered the industry. Sometimes I still don’t, but I’m in a way better place now. With that being said, I would happily work for other companies if I was happy with their ethics, aesthetics, and trusted them enough to own content of me.

13) Who are your role models in porn and how/why do they inspire you?

You know, it’s kind of weird how the people I look up to have changed over the years… I mentioned earlier that a lot of my views have evolved since I first started porn and I guess my role models would change accordingly. In the beginning it was really easy to idolize these super huge pornstars who were beautiful and living glamorously. Nowadays, I find myself in the most awe of everyday survival sex workers, women of color in the industry, women who have power in the industry, etc. My ideals have changed a lot and so have my ideas of success. I realized the real heroes of this industry are the people who go unheard because their stories aren’t easy to capitalize off of, aren’t as fun to read about, or they aren’t all about empowerment and getting ass. They inspire me because I was a survival sex worker of color before I was even 20 years old and I didn’t know how to express being unhappy with certain aspects of my life without being accused of shaming sex work for sharing my experience. Don’t get me wrong though, there are tons of good things about my job and I still have my picks of fave stars. I found myself relating more to people who were honest about their time in the industry. Pretending like sex work is only a positive thing all the time erases a lot of experiences. A lot of porn stars do important activist work and I find myself sort of following to see how that sort of thing can fit into my career, too.

14) What do you most want to achieve in your career in adult?

I want to continue to outdo myself. Over and over and over! I try not to compete too much, even mentally, in this industry so I try to just progress as much as possible. I never had the goal to shoot for every company or have a certain number of scenes out, but I did hope for recognition someday. I thought it would be for my solo website at some point. So it was pretty unexpected to have had a DVD I was a part of receive two cool xbiz noms, one of them being best feminist release. That’s awesome! I feel pretty proud of that. If I could stay on this track where I can book work and have it be work I can feel good about, I’d consider myself successful.

15) What is the best mainstream movie you have seen recently?

Man, I haven’t had time for movies at all lately. I haven’t even caught up on all my TV shows. I have a hard time sitting down and actually enjoying a movie sometimes. The last movie I remember watching fully is The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, which is a super weird movie.

16) How about the best porno movie? Is there someone whose movies you like to watch who is working now?

I’d rather read my porn than watch it. Is that weird? Anything with pretty girls is something I’m into though.

17) Are you into toys to get yourself off alone or are you a low-tech woman?

I rarely use toys. I love using my fingers, feeling everything. The process is way more sensual. Plus my orgasms are always so much better when I have a good build up and work for it. Toys are too easy and sometimes can be so strong that the orgasm doesn’t even feel good… which is a bummer. I much prefer using my hands. Or a tongue, idk.

19) What is coming up for you?

Lately, I’ve been doing some mainstream comedy stuff. Don’t worry, I’m not leaving porn. I actually wrote a web series we are in the process of shooting now. I’m also starring in it, alongside a really great cast. It’s a comedic parody series about a trashy Hollywood family… What’s not to like?
