While VH1's Dating Naked seemed like the be-all and end-all of absurd reality television programming, that was before I laid eyes on Sex Box. Based on a 2013 British show, Sex Box features what is billed as a "groundbreaking, unprecedented and life-changing way for couples in crisis to heal their sexual and emotional issues," but in actuality is just two people fucking in a box in front of a studio audience.
The series premiered on Friday on WE tv, which claims that it "showcases and celebrates modern women who are bold, independent and taking control of their lives," and I guess that already hyperbolic statement can now be amended to include "fuck their significant other in a box on a stage in front of an audience." The debut episode featured three couples who came out to speak with a panel of "sexperts" about their sexual issues, then retired to the box to do their business, followed by debriefing and cocktails.
According to the show's rhetoric, this is the moment at which couples can be at their most honest with one another. This press release helps to elucidate these claims...
WEtv’s “Sex Box” takes therapy to a whole new level. Couples not only discuss their relationship issues with a panel of experts, but also spend time in a box on the show’s set to have sex in front of a live studio audience.
In each of the 11 hour-long episodes, couples speak candidly with a panel of “sexperts” for the chance to reignite their connection. After receiving initial advice, the couples must decide if they are willing to step into the box to resolve their intimacy issues. Post-coitus, a scientifically proven time when people are more trusting and open due to the body’s natural release of oxytocin (“cuddle hormone”), the couples have a shockingly raw discussion with the experts about their experiences and relationships in an effort to solve their problems.
Uproxx (link below) did a very thorough play-by-play of the premiere, so I won't rehash it here, but needless to say, if you have the means, you should definitely check this thing out. It's as glorious a train wreck as I've seen in some time, and if for no other reason, it's worth watching for the comical silk pajamas the guys are forced to wear during debriefing...
The show airs Friday nights right after Ow! My Balls...
