The Breakfast Club is one of those movies that defines a generation. It is timeless. Every generation that watches the movie finds something to latch on to, something that speaks to them. While the movie is truly one of the best movies of all time, it is missing one thing that most 80s movies had, nudity. Apparently there was a nude scene in the film, but it ended up being cut.
In the original script the students sneak out of the library and find their way into the women’s locker room. My guess is the boys are the one’s who do this, much to the protest of the ladies, though I didn’t read the script. Anyway, they find a peephole into the showers and end up getting a glimpse of the topless synchronized-swimming coach. Whoa!
Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, and one of the producers of the film Michelle Manning were all very much against the scene. Feeling it was sexist and misogynistic, the three of them voiced their concerns to director John Hughes. Hughes gave it some thought and then decided to cut the scene from the film.
As a fan of The Breakfast Club, I don’t really find any faults in the movie and since the majority of the film takes place in one location, I can’t imagine what the film would be like if the shower scene remained. But, I do enjoy a good peephole shower scene, so it could have made the film even better.
