America Ferrera Talks About Onscreen Sex With Real Life Hubby

CELEBRITY

Watching your friends who are couples making out is pretty uncomfortable. So it is no surprise that watching a married couple have sex on the big screen can also be kind of awkward. Well, imagine how awkward it must be for the married couple making out in front of camera. America Ferrera recently talked with Cosmopolitan.com about rolling around in the sack with her hubby, Ryan Piers Williams, in their upcoming movie X/Y.

The movie is described as a frank and honest look at a married couple that are a struggling with issues of intimacy and fidelity. Here are some of the highlights form Ferrera’s interview:

The film opens right up with a sex scene between you and your own husband. Filming sex scenes is notoriously unsexy, but was it any better doing it with Ryan?
It was. Because we were so, you know! [Laughs] As you said, any sex scene is uncomfortable to shoot, mainly because there's a crew on set with you, watching you. But Ryan and I are so comfortable with each other and we felt a hundred percent safe with each other. It was probably more uncomfortable for everyone else on set than it was for us.

The film is extremely frank when it comes to sex. How did you and Ryan approach that aspect of the material?
It's about the story. The story that was being told here was: How do you achieve intimacy? And sex, in and of itself, is not intimacy. It can be intimate, but it doesn't always give you a connection with somebody, if that's what you're looking for. These characters — whether it's a product of their current time, their generation, their culture, their status — they're all looking for something that feels real. The context is that they live in a culture that promotes, if anything, very quick and superficial connections, versus the real deep, intimate kinds.

There's a real push and pull between emotional intimacy and physical intimacy.
Certainly for my own character, sex and the physicality was a distraction from intimacy with herself and intimacy with her life. Yes, there is a lot of sex in the movie, but to make the point that the sex, in and of itself, is not the connection and is not the intimacy, and the moments that are worked toward for these characters is the true intimacy, and where do they find that true intimacy? Whether that's with themselves or with their partner.

Sometimes the chemistry can work for married couples on screen (Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin) and sometimes it’s just weird (Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman). Guess we’ll all just have to check out X/Y when it hits the big screen sometime in March.
