New Study Finds Lower Testosterone Isn’t The Cause Of Low Sex Drive

These days, you can pretty much guarantee that if you turn on the TV, you're gonna see a commercial for some new testosterone product promising to help turn older men into horny teenagers again (not a scientific claim). However, a new study conducted by the University of Sydney’s School of Public Health posits that lower testosterone isn’t the cause of a lower sex drive, it’s the result.

The Concord Health and Aging in Men Project looked at 1,705 men aged 70 and older in Sydney, Australia for over two years. The study found that baseline serum testosterone levels in men didn’t really affect their decline in sex or desire to have sex. Instead they found that a decline in testosterone was more related to having less sex and the lack of a desire to have sex.

“In older men, decreased sexual activity and desire may be a cause, not an effect, of low circulating testosterone level,” concluded lead study author Benjumin Hsu, from the University of Sydney’s School of Public Health.

In a sense, if you don’t use it, you lose it. I guess one could say the biggest take away from this study is that if you want to keep your testosterone levels high, keep having sex. Sound advice no matter where it's coming from.
