The excellent coming of age, young adult book "The Perks of Being A Wallflower" is being banned from the curriculum of Sheehan High School in Wallingford, Connecticut over concerns about the book's content. The book--which was made into an excellent movie with the same title back in 2012--is a realistic take on the world of being a teenager, with it touching on topics such as suicide, sexual abuse, homosexuality, masturbation, and consumption of alcohol.
Jean Pierre Bolat, parent and now a Board of Education member in Wallingford, filed a formal complaint petitioning to have the book removed from his son’s freshman class after having a conversation with his son regarding the book’s inclusion of themes such as homosexuality, masturbation, sex, and what he calls, a “glorification of alcohol use and drugs.” Bolat became concerned that not only was the book was being taught in classrooms but that the popular film adaptation was also being shown to students. The book is already on the American Library Association's list of books most challenged by censors.
What the hell, Wallingford? It's a very truthful, honest book and movie and the dirty bits are, well, really just a part of life growing up.
