Twenty Questions with New Sensations/Digital Sin Director Paul Woodcrest

New Sensations/Digital Sin director Paul Woodcrest  creats gorgeous, innovative, kinky porn that all of us here at Fleshbot dig immensely.  His star showcases in the "Meet...." series are fan favorites and he was nominated for Best Director at the last AVN Awards for "Meet Carter", which starred AVN Best New Starlet Carter Cruise.  He has been shooting porn for ten years and he also directs all of Shane Diesel's releases.  He works on all of director Jacky St. James features including the "Emma Marx" ones, helping her develop her distinctive visions.  Through his work, his love of lighting a woman correctly is always present and I always enjoy checking out what he has done recently.  Here are his answers to twenty questions.

1) What kind of guy were you back in high school? Did you always love using cameras?

I always wanted to be a photographer, but I didn’t know what I wanted to take pictures of. As a little kid, I took pictures of everything. When I got to high school I took photography and spent a lot of time in the darkroom. I just loved the entire process.

2) Were you a porn fan before you got into the industry? Who were your favorite porn stars/favorite porn movies?

No, I was actually never a porn fan. I used to masturbate to five-minute clips of any tits and ass I could find. I never was a fan of anyone in particular. I never watched a full-length movie. I just watched clips.

3) What do you think shaped you into the director that you are today?

Brother Love. He worked for New Sensations at the time I began directing. He was always so good at interacting with talent. He was a really personable guy. Talent was always comfortable when he would work with them. I learned from him how to do behind-the-scenes interviews and talk to people… the personality skills. If you can make the talent feel comfortable, there’s a better chance for a solid scene. Tech-wise, however, I learned from [News Sensations President] Scott Taylor, who was doing a lot of shooting back then, and, of course, Eddie Powell, who is still a wealth of inspiration.

4) How would you describe your creative relationship with Eddie Powell?

Homosexual. We pick bugs off each other’s backs. We’ve worked together a long time so we can communicate without speaking a word. We just know what needs to be done to make the scenes work; to bring whatever fantasy and/or story we’re creating to life.

5) Who is your favorite male performer/female performer to shoot and why?

I really enjoy working with male talent that can carry a scene even when it’s with a newer girl. I like Ramon Nomar, Toni Ribas, James Deen… all the guys who have been around awhile. Regardless if the girl is new or not, I know I’m going to get a solid scene with them.
Same goes for female talent. I like girls who can make the scene work if they’re with a weaker male. Girls like India Summer, Riley Reid, Carter Cruise, Bonnie Rotten… strong personalities who care most about giving the best performance possible.

6) What can you share about your [first] BDSM feature?

It was a great experience. I had a strong cast. Sara Luvv and James Deen turned in a powerful scene, one of my favorites of the year so far. I’ve shot BDSM scenes before, but to put together a BDSM movie start to finish was rewarding. I really like the ropes and have become quite good at using them. I like how they visualize the mental aspect of that genre.

7) What have you seen change most within the industry in your ten plus years directing porn?

Ten years ago women were more into the sex. Now they’re into the fame. Social media makes them feel bigger than what they are and gives them a sense of entitlement. Many are more into the star aspect than the porn aspect of being a porn star.

8) What fetishes do you have that you haven’t yet shot or is there a particular kink that you want to put in a future release?

I’m a big tit guy. I’m simple. Give me some big tits and I’m happy. I can shoot big tits all day. Bondage was the last fetish I wanted to do. But, you never know. You can get kinkier as you get older.

9) What is one thing that you think that a lot of porn directors get wrong about the way that they create a scene?

Lighting. Throwing up lights doesn’t mean you’re going to see a beautiful body, but if you light the scene in the right way, it’s going to accentuate the girl’s attributes. Lighting is supposed to make her pretty not gritty. Most director lighting schemes often fail to showcase a woman at her full potential.

10) What are the best things about being a porn director?

I like the creative freedom I have at New Sensations. Bringing whatever ideas I have in my head to life… and I like playing with cameras and looking at naked girls; expensive equipment and nude boobs.

11) What do you think are “must-own” DVDs for fans of your work?

“Meet Carter,” “Meet Dakota,” “From Both Ends 2” and the “Watching My Hotwife” series. Fans have really connected with those. “Bound for Sex” and “Interracial Family Affair” series are also proving to be popular. “Daddy’s Little Doll” is a guilty pleasure.

12) What goes into choosing the star of one of the “Meet…” titles?

Girls that stand out and are eager to push themselves sexually. I know that’s not saying much, but it’s just something you see in someone. It’s their drive to achieve goals and an ability to draw people closer to cheer them on.

13) What do you like most about working with Jacky St. James?

She’s hot. She directs in the nude. Working with Jacky is seamless. I focus on the technical aspects while she deals with talent and directs. It doesn’t get better than that.

14) Who are your role models in porn and how/why do they inspire you?

My peers and the people I work with every single day keep me motivated, keep me going.

15) What can we look for in your upcoming releases?

I would say… sex. Lots and lots of sex. Some of it kinky. Some of it wet. Some of it anal. Some of it MILFy. Just lots of sex. All lit beautifully. 

16) What is the best mainstream movie you have seen recently?

“Birdman.” The acting and the movie as a whole took filmmaking to next level.

17) How about the best porno movie? Is there someone whose movies you like to watch who is working now who is not with New Sensations/Digital Sin?

I don’t watch adult films outside of work, but I like amateur cam girls. 

18) What do you like to do for fun?

I love the outdoors! Camping, paintball… anything to relax the mind.

19) If you could cast any celebrities to do an epic sex scene for you, who would you cast? Give us your male and female choices and tell us what you would ask of them.
