Can you hear that? No? It's the sound of semen flying right at you in 3D. Not since
the Swedish Chef has someone so boldly exploited 3D to his own ends, but that's Gaspar Noé's stock in trade. His newest film,
Love 3D, opens in France this month, but still doesn't have a release date in the US so, you know, there's another reason—as if you needed one—to hate the French.
The film
opened to mix reviews at this year's Cannes Film Festival, though even its detractors seemed impressed by the film's many close-ups of ejaculation. Jesus, the French must be falling all over themselves to declare this art. The film is not, however, going to be classified as pornography despite meeting virtually all of the qualifications, which is something of a step forward in the blurring of the lines when it comes to sex in cinema. Were it any other director, I might be more inclined to champion any film attempting to do this, but Noé's repeated attempts to shock and offend audience members with his nausea-inducing camera movements, shocking sexual violence, and insistence on casting Paz de la Huerta in things just turns me off.
