It’s about time. I mean, with the amount of technology we have for the silliest things, isn’t it time that we re-design the condom? Well, apparently that was also on the mind of Bill and Melinda Gates when they announced that their Foundation would be making condom innovation a priority. The funny thing is we know how important a condom is while having sex, and yet the shocking result is that only about 5% of men wear them when having sex. I mean, for reals! That is shocking!
There was only one time in my life that I didn’t wear a condom (I was young) with a new lover - thank god nothing came of it, but I regretted it and have always introduced a condom while having sex. If the man doesn’t want to wear a condom, then he won’t be having sex with this lady. But I get it, I don’t have a penis, so I will never know what it feels like wearing a condom. And considering that only 5% of men wear them, there must be some design issues here.
Reading about the recipients of the grant money from the Gates Foundation, one condom designer stood out. I liked the idea behind Danny Resnic’s design. He wants to create a condom that won’t break - because he caught HIV in 1993 when a condom broke while having sex, and he also wants to create a condom that enhances sex, while others are trying to create a condom experience that is as natural to the real thing as possible.
I guess for me the argument as to which condom design is better lies on which side of the ‘sex toys during sex’ camp you fall on. As someone who regularly, if not always, uses vibrators during sex to enhance my experience, I would love my partner to feel the same. And I figure the only way to get a man to actually put on a damn condom without fuss is if the condom actually makes sex better. Granted Resnic’s design looks awful, like a latex glove for the penis, making me think of washing the dishes instead of sexy thoughts. But then again, many male sex toys (and some female) look pretty awful anyway.
I also like the idea of having a condom that won’t break. It happened to me once with another new lover and it scared the shit out of me. Never having to have that happen again would be great. Thanks!
If I had to swing towards the more natural experience I guess my vote would with the Galactic Cap which raised over $100,000 on Indiegogo. It seems great for regular lovers who don’t wish to get pregnant, but perhaps not the best for brand new lovers because there’s still a chance you might catch an STI. That said, the design of the condom seems to be unintrusive and leaves all the important bits on a penis exposed so that both of you can enjoy sex like nature intended - except without the pregnancy scare.
Sadly, it doesn’t seem that the Galactic Cap has been tested to see if the condom will come off during sex - especially during really rough sex. Nor does it state how well it will fair with anal sex, where else Resnic’s condom will be approved for anal sex.
Either way, exciting times ahead for condoms people. Perhaps some good will come out of this, better pleasure experience and safer sex for all!
