Finally A Sex Ed Video That Teaches You Something About Sex
If you were “lucky” enough to live in a state that actually provided a sex education class in school, then you probably remember watching the most awkward, outdated, VHS copy of a movie titled something like John And Jane Have Feelings In Their Private Parts: A Guide To Sex and STDs. Really, the only thing you ended up learning is how awkward those movies made your teacher. Sadly, one of the important things you should learn about is either not discussed or completely wrong. John Oliver decided to tackle the issue of sex education on Last Week Tonight and produced probably the best sex ed video ever.
Granted, I have not been in a sex ed classroom for many years, but from what I have seen, read, and heard, apparently you get about as much information on sex as you would if you got it from your slightly older cousin who looked at a porn mag once. Could you imagine taking a class on auto repair only to have the instructor never open the hood of the car and tell you that if you try to change your oil before you’re married you’re going to hell?
So Oliver enlisted the help of Kristen Schaal, Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, Aisha Tyler, Jack McBrayer, Laverne Cox, and Kumail Nanjiani to make a sex ed video to end all sex videos. If you want to skip ahead and just watch that part, it’s starts around the 18 minute mark, but you should really watch the whole thing.
Teaching sex education doesn’t lead to more teens having sex just like learning about World War 2 doesn’t make teenagers want to start to World War 3. Remember what the cartoon G.I. Joe taught us, knowing is half the battle. The other half of the battle is learning about the responsible use of birth control, how to use it properly, the importance of consent, and understanding the changes, feelings, and urges the human body goes through when it becomes sexually active.
