Focus On Blocks Instead Of Boobies
We are all looking for things to help take our minds off something. Whether it’s finding a way to distract us from that chocolate craving or coming up with a reason not to have another drink, most of us will try anything to not give in to our worst temptations. Well, apparently you can play Tetris for 3 minutes and all your worries will go away. And yes, Tetris can even calm your sexual urges.
Now, I don’t know if I buy this shit (though I guess I should try it before I knock it), but apparently researchers at Plymouth University and Queensland University of Technology in Australia discovered that if you play the game for only a couple of minutes you will forget all about your love of sweets, whiskey, and boobies. What’s the logical behind all this, you ask? Well, I’ll let Professor Jackie Andrade of Plymouth University answer that one:
“We think the Tetris effect happens because craving involves imagining the experience of consuming a particular substance or indulging in a particular activity. Playing a visually interesting games like Tetris occupies the mental processes that support that imagery; it is hard to imagine something vividly and play Tetris at the same time.”
Researches found that participants in the study had lowered craving levels (around 14 percent) for booze, food, sex, sleeping, and even the desire to socialize with friends. One could (and should) argue that people are replacing one addictive thing with another addictive thing, though. Whether that is a good or a bad thing, the study can’t really answer. But I know I sometimes really want to hit up a local donut shop and it’s really hard to talk myself out of it. I wouldn’t mind having a way to distract myself.
So, I guess we better all dig out our old Gameboys or download the app for our phone and dive into some Tetris during those moments of weakness. Then again, I wonder what the "do this instead of playing Tetris" study will look like.
