Porn On TV, Porn On Computers, Porn On Phones, Now Porn On Fabric
We probably all grew up with at least one Cross-Stitch saying hanging on a wall in our house. Even though doing cross-stitch takes a lot of work, I don’t think too many of us really miss the “Bless This Mess” cross-stitch hanging on our walls. Well now, I kind of want a cross-stitch done by Leah Emery. You see, she decided to take scenes from vintage porn films and turn them into cross-stitch.
Emery is not trying to take something that many people consider dirty and turn it clean. Quiet the opposite; Emery believes that many people can’t really explore sex and intimacy with openness it deserves.
"Despite [sex] being such a basic human function," Emery worries that we're not able to explore sex and intimacy "with candor."
By focusing on these private moments, Emery hopes that as people see them, they'll be able to have a real conversation about sex and their desires. Emery has considered making more hardcore cross-stitch scenes, an idea she got while working as a video gamer writer and constantly receiving porn spam.
"It's expanded over the last several years into a fully 'fleshed out' research project that pushes me to try to probe the limits of [...] sexual expression."
Of course if Emery does do a more hardcore series she could totally call that series “Bless This Mess.”
One thing art is really supposed to do is make us, the viewer, think about something in a different way. I think it’s impossible to look at these porn cross-stitch and not think about sex and porn in a different way.
