No Fucksaw Demonstrations This Time Around
Normally when I hear people complaining about Sex Education, I tune them out because their arguments are almost always stupid; but when people are complaining that part of a Sex Ed class was a live demonstration on how to turn a power tool into a sex toy, while helpful, I can understand the complaint. Well, Northwestern University has corrected its error and is now offering a free online Sex 101 class.
According to The Chicago Sun-Times (link below), Teresa Woodruff, the vice chair for research in obstetrics and gynecology at the Feinberg School of Medicine, has created a series of short videos that will cover the basics of sex and reproduction.
“If you Google it, there’s nothing out there like this,” Woodruff explained Tuesday. “Reproduction is one of those things where we don’t assemble the definitions, the fundamental science and the health outcomes in one place that is easily accessible to the public.”
The videos will not feature any power tool to sex toy conversion segments, but will instead feature Woodruff in a lab with a chalkboard or using hologram models to help students understand their crazy hormones, how the different sex organs work, STDs, and the class will also explore sexual violence.
“For many college freshmen, they may have had information in a sex ed class in school, but some of them have not had a really good education on this topic,” Woodruff said. “For some, this information is a little bit embarrassing or taboo.”
I have always lived my life by the wisdom of G.I. Joe, that “knowing is half the battle,” so I’m all for this and I hope it takes off and more courses like this will be offered to more people. Look, it doesn’t matter how you feel about sex, it is so incredibly important to learn about your body, your partner’s body, sex, what is right, and what is wrong. Always remember, if it wasn’t for sex, none of us would be here.
