Throwback Thursday: Jane Fonda Was “Barbarella”

One of my all-time favorite podcasts is You Must Remember This by Karina Longworth and she is in the middle of a series contrasting and comparing the careers of Hollywood stars Jane Fonda and Jean Seberg. Longworth does incredible amounts of research on her subjects in every series like this that she does and the latest entry in the "Jean and Jane" series is all about Fonda, Fonda's marriage to French director Roger Vadim and the film "Barbarella".

The orgies that were held in the Vadim/Fonda house were those of Hollywood legend and a story is told about how Vadim and actor Warren Beatty compare Fonda unfavorably to Beatty and Vadim's mutual sexual conquest/French sexpot actress Brigitte Bardot. (Jerks.) Long before the character of General Leia Organa rocked that cinnamon bun hairdo, Fonda decided to go ahead and take a risk on the sci-fi genre as the sexy blonde heroine in "Barbarella". This was not a time when Comic-Cons celebrated those who chose roles in sci-fi or comic book-derived storylines and Fonda's sexy time in this movie was way ahead of its time.
